I'm putting together a PIII 800Mhz, 10G HD, 128M Ram, etc. for my brother-in-law, and am looking for suggestions as to a reliable motherboard compatible with Win Me. Need 133 Mhz bus, NO onboard audio or video,at least 5 PCI, 1 ISA, AGP. Have favored Abit in the past, but can't seem to locate one without onboard audio/video. Any brand/model # suggestions appreciated.

I hope I'm not too late!!! Listen, Windows Me freezes third party apps, like corel 9 and
photoshop 5.5. I've had bad experience with Win Me, I would recommend waiting untill Microsoft creates bug fixes. Frankly, Win2000 is more stable. I found that Video and Audio drivers become unstable under Millenium. Good Luck!!!

Abit KT7: no onboard sound or SMA video. 6 PCI, 1 ISA, AGP, and available in standard with ATA 100 support, or RAID for $30.00 more. I'd go for the RAID version if there's a possibility that your bro wants it in the future. If not, forget it. One of the best boards on the market (albeit with the KT133 CS). Here's a review:

Have fun. By the way, mobos aren't rated for OS compatibility. Some are more stable than others, but there's no such tthing as an ME or W2K-compatible board.

I am currently using Photoshop 5.5 and Corel 9 with no problems on my WinME machine. Most of WinME instability comes from upgrading from 98/95. There's a bad issue when upgrading where vxd loads and hardware are screwed up which basically causes so many problems for users who have upgraded from 98/95 to WinME.

But like most cases, it is always recommended that you install the operating system from a clean install to avoid headaches such as these.

What Vod said is correct also, motherboards are not rated for OS compatibility. At the same time there has been boards with certain chipsets that tend to be unstable with some OS... but that's usually a rare case and mostly a thing of the past.

As for board brands... so many companies are producing AMD boards now that I've rarely kept up with intel boards. But usually the 3 brands that I usually stick to are ABIT, ASUS or MSI... sometimes SOYO. Those 4 brands are the ones I trust most.
