I booted up my Hewlett-Packard with WinMe on the 14th or 15th to find that for some reason, my computer was set to 640x480 resolution, and 16-colors. There was also no sound, except that there were now PC-speaker beeps in place of alert sounds. When i tried to change the res/color back, there was no more video mode menu in the desktop-rightclick menu. In the display properties, i couldn't change it back. Well i finally managed to download some updated video drivers, and now my color and resolution is restored, but there is only one color on the title bars of windows. The "color 2" box in video properties is disabled, and the sound errors still exist. I also now get kernel32 errors when i rightclick the desktop, and rundll32 errors on other occasions. Games and winamp won't start because of failure to initialize DirectSound. This has happened once before, but all i did to fix it was reinstall windows. If anyone could help me find a better way to remedy this situation than waiting an hour for all that crappy reinstallation, please help. Thanks.

Try to do a system restore to a day that the PC was working corectly. Go(start,accessories,system tools,system restore). Pick a date that is in bold and do the restore. I hope this helps. JB

click on start > run > type system.ini and under [BOOT] make sure theres the line : drivers=mmsystem.dll IF THERE ISNT.. put it there
