Running ME on Compaq Presario 5008US, Quantum Fireball 40 gig.
Problem #1, when I am offline and access device manager, my ISP sign on pops up for no reason.
Problem #2, when I am online and access device manager, my firewall, Zone Alarm, asks whether I will let a program called sucat.reg access the internet, any help as this is agravating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanx!!!!
I think it's your MS automatic updates trying to call out...Try going to Control Panel/Automatic Updates, and turn it off.You can also try ging to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced tab,and uncheck "check for publisher's certificate revocation".reboot.
As far as the sucat.reg,I would just say no.
When i get something trying to access, and I don't know what is,or can't find out...I just say no.Hasn't hurt me yet.Get back to us so we'll all know.
I would be a bit concerned if you can't identify what application this SUCAT.REG file is part of. Since there's every possibility that a .REG file is a registry entry to merge I would be very suspicious of it needing access to the internet. Your firewall should show the IP address of where it's trying to connect to. Resolve this address and find out what's there without letting it access the net until you are positive it isn't likely to be damaging.
Always stay on the cautious side - last time I thoughtlessly let something have access without checking it first I caught a webdialler program casually installing itself into my registry and system! Luckily I removed it before it could do any damage.
Take care,
Mark

That's why I suggested "Just Say No"...because I can't find anything on SUCAT.REG...hopefully someone will come up with something.
VW...I suggest you do a virus scan to be sure,but read both of these;

I run McAffee and my dats are up to date and haven't gotten any alerts!!!!!!!! Also have Adaware and love same, I don't get scanned as much with this program now and love same. This happens sometimes and I attributed it to the wonderful ME!
I hate to say it but I usually have to restore once about every 2-3 months and do a master boot wipe as well using 2 Compaq CDs.
I would love to take ME off and put my 98SE edition on my new computer though!!!!!!!!!
and use Norton Ghost to back up same.

This SUCAT.REG is a normal function of
device manager trying to find updates...

I forgot to say that sometimes it can be a virus thing,
as usually these try to fool you that they
are a normal function.
Do a Google search ......

The kid is right.
This is a problem I have encountered a number of times before. If you use a personal firewall you will get the message
'Windows Catalog Registration' from your computer wants to connect to 207.46.197.113, port 80
when you select device manager. The program responsible is
c:\windows\system\sucatreg.exe
It has to do with driver signing within Windows.
Have a look at
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q232/8/93.ASP
and
http://www.microsoft.com/HWDEV/desinit/digitsign.htm
To fix it, go to Control Panel, double-click Internet Options, go to Tab labeled Advanced, scroll down the list to the heading of Security, and Uncheck the box "Check for publisher’s certificate revocation". Click OK.Regards,
Trev
