I build my first computer december 2005,
installed windows me and xp on it,everything
was great until last week...
i swich on my computer and after winME is loaded i notice an unusual
HDD activity and i say unusual because after 5 months using
this new computer and 4 years with another
with also winME installed,i now it should not
doing this so i use ctr-alt-delete and i see
a cmdninst that i didn't even now that exist
it dosn't give any error message,also dosn't
show the (not responding) tag, just sits there
so i kill it and after that the led in my HDD
stops flashing.
so i reboot and.... same thing
so i boot in dos mode and thinking this is a
spywhare or something bad,i delete the program cmdninst................bad choise
after that i get an error loading explorer
and i can't start winME............puf¡
so i go whith xp(in the same HDD,diferent partition) and it won't boot not even in safe
mode...............agrrrr¡
then i reformat the HDD,eliminate the partitions an create newones i get my winME
installation cd and install it.....
same problem........
i use scandisck with a surface scan.......OK
i check the memory with an utility........OK
i disconect everything (cds,flopy,agp board,
modem,)
same problem............
i chanche bios to default values, reformat,
reinstall and..
same problem..............
so i buy a new motherboard,reformat,reinstall
and....
same problem...........
this final time i notice something:if i run a
program let's say notepad the cursor takes
the shape of the arrow with the sand clock
the HDD begins to flash and wen i use ctrl-alt-delete
a see two notepads...one that sais: utitled-notepad (like the window i'm seeing)
and another that just sais notepad if i close
the notepad window the untitled-notepad desapears from the taskmanager but the other
stays there so i kill it and after that if i
run other progam same hapens i get two:
progname(like apears in the program window)
and just progname(like the file it self)and other thing: if i don't kill this hidden
notepad or whatever program everything runs
fine... i don't get duplicates from other programs y run.
but if i kill it then the next program i run
gets duplicated.
and this hapens even after fresh re install
with two diferent motherboardsany clue?
hello there!

Let me start by asking, what's a Sempron 1440MHz? Either it's a typo or you have your CPU clocked wrong.
When exactly does this problem return? What I mean is, at what point during the reinstall do you check to see if this problem is present again? Do you format, do the fresh install of WinME & THEN check? or do you format, install WinME, install system drivers, other 3rd party software, run Windows Update, etc...& then check??
My guess is you're not telling the whole story about how this started. What did you install, update, or change? I'm guessing a driver. If I'm correct, are you still using the same 'new' driver after the reinstall?

hello thank's for answer:
sempron is the name of my AMD microprocesor,
1440 MHz is the speed (1.4Ghz)i found the problem: a virus
the problem first started after i run some programs that
i have backed up in a cd prior to format, and after the problem begin
this programs where allready infected with this virus,so when i was testing them
i was infecting my computer again, and all that HDD
activity was the virus in action: infectin gall my exe files in the HDDwell i think that's good because that means
mi hardware is ok,but still i had to buy a new motherboard.........stupid me
that's what i get for not using any virus protection program.thank's again.
hello there!

Have you applied trevs twaeaks to your system .I know that made my P3 750mhz system run much faster and error free !
I hope this link is still working >http://www.burzurq.com/forum/trevtweak.html

To the best of my knowledge, there is no Sempron that runs at 1.4GHz, that's why I asked. Assuming this is a socket A system, all Semprons run at 166MHz(333FSB)...so just taking a 'shot in the dark', I'm guessing you actually have a Sempron 2500+ which is supposed to run at 1.75GHz (10.5 x 166), but you have it clocked at 10.5 x 133MHz(266FSB)

right,i'm sorry i have a sempron 2500+ but i didn't mention it
because i don't now what the 2500+ means.
and about clocking:
i don't now, i never clock anythinghello there!

2500+ is the model number of your CPU...it's also know it's "performance rating". Even though it is designed to run at 1.75GHz (10.5 x 166MHz), it will perform similar to an Intel Celeron that runs at 2.5GHz.
By not setting up your CPU correctly, you're losing a lot of performance. Read your motherboard manual & find out how to increase the FSB from 133MHz to 166MHz...it will either be a BIOS setting or a jumper on the motherboard. BIOS settings should ALWAYS be tweaked to best match the hardware you're running...if you're simply running the default settings, you're not running your system at it's full potential. Right now you're 20% underclocked.
If you list the make/model of your board & type pf RAM you have, I should be able to recommend some settings to get you running up to speed.

thank's
my motherboard is a BIOSTAR K8M800-M7A
and the type of ram is DDR-333and some of my bios setup settings are:
current fsb frequency 200MHz
current DRAM frequency 166MHz
CPU clock 200MHzthe fsb and DRAM fields apear grayed so i can't change them
the cpu clock i can increment it up to 232
other options that apear are:max memclock.
1T/2T memory timing.
CAS# latency.
RAS# to CAS# delay.
min RAS# active time.
row precharge time.
CPU Vcore.
DDR voltage.
Auto detect PCI clk.
Spread spectrum.
hello there!

You should have said it was a S754 Sempron...your 2500+ DOES run at 1.4GHz! For best performance, you really should be running PC3200 RAM (DDR400).
