Okay guys I would be eternally greatful if someone had a fix for me on my latest computer program... Heres what happens... I try to run a defrag and it says Windows cannot defrag this drive because it cannot access part of the drive, to repair the drive try running a through scan on scan disk... Okay so I try this and Scan disk doesnt finish okay it does but after about 2 days... and it never does find the error causing the problem... (I also tried running scan disk in safe mode so nothing could interfere but alas it still doesnt find and error and still takes 2 days to complete... Ok so I figure I will just use my recovery disks and restore my computer to its former glory and manufactured state... However... for some reason my computer will not restore... I called Best Buy... those pricks! and they said to try running a scan disk even though I told them I already tried that option... They said there was probably something wrong with my restore disks... I can tell you there is not they are in perfect condition... Is there something wrong with my drive? Did anyone else encounter this problem? Is there anyone who can give me another suggestion to try? PLease someone in the name of god help... Oh and on 2 seperate notes... When I put a cd into my cd rom it doesnt automatically start I have to do it it manually and go to my computer and click on it... Also I am having a rpoblem with my virtual memory I have negitaive 13 thousand... yet I still have 51 gigs of unused space on my drive! i DONT UNDERSTAND... If anyone coul dhelp on any of these problems I would be really thankfull!

Sounds like you're having way too much fun - and a possibly a failing hard drive.

To enable auto run, select the drive in Device Manager and check the Auto Insert Notification box.

The Virtual Memory problem is discussed in the following Article:

Negative Hard Disk Free Size Reported on Virtual Memory Tab in System Properties (Q272620)

Why it's so slow is a mystery (although the through option does take some time to complete). Check the HD settings in Device Manager, and ensure you've got the DMA box checked. Also - check that you're not running in compatibility mode (system.cpl - Performance tab).

Hmmm Everything is as you say it should be... the vitual memory isnt really a problem its the fact I cant restore my computer thats bugging me... Any other advice? Why do you think my hardrive is failing???? What can I do to fix it? or do I need a new hard drive... I dont really have any thing critical on my computer... so im not worried about backing it up. Computers piss me off...

I've seen the SCANDISK error occur when there's physical damage on the drive, and it also sounds as if your Restore Disk is detecting a similar problem.

There's another article that's related to problems on drives larger than 32 GB (not related directly to ME, but it may still apply).

ScanDisk Errors on IDE Hard Disks Larger Than 32 GB (Q243450)

If you don't care to retain any of your existing files - Create A Boot Disk, boot to DOS and format. If it detects a physical error, it will attempt to assign an alternate track in it's place.

From that point you'll have to do a complete re-install.

As said in Response 3. Make a Windows ME restore diskette, boot from it and run ScanDisk for a DOS diskette. The version that runs there is different that the one in Windows ME. It give you a visual progress indicator. Watch it and see if it is slowing down at some specific spot. Your problem could be the disk drive. Testing from DOS will tell you that. It could also be something wrong with the Windows drivers or its configuration. If it works OK from DOS, then its not the hardware.
