still cant play divx avi

considering the main reason i bought a cable modem wa to download films etc im still not able to play any divx or avi films?ive tried every cocer,the 3.11 alpha thing,smr patches still nothing,am i right in thinking the lack of a certain codec would show a particular symptom on playback?this is why i explain what im seeing on screen,its a black background,with lots of multicolour shapes flashing around,either that or a grey screen,i didnt have any problems when i had Win 98?i have win media player,realplayer,BS player,divx player and quicktime.please somebody help as its really getting on my nerves!thanks.

If you have Media Player 7 (it comes with ME) maybe you should download the upgrade to 7.1 from MicroSoft. It has updated codecs and allowed me to play AVI's which had a more recent compression applied. I got my copy from a games magazine CD :^D

If your divx player is unable to play the movies, it is most likely your video card. What are your system specs?
try one thing... try to open the avi in windows movie maker.... i still can not figure out these codeces... some of the avis are playing only on my windows 98... some of them only on my windows ME (using the same WMP)... some of them only in windows movie maker, some only in apple quicktime....some work only after i convert them to mpg...some can not be converted to mpg... i would not blame windows ME on that (even if i would love to... hehehe) Regards Miro
