The other night I went to turn on my computer. It started up and looks like it's in safemode with the large icons ect, but all the program icons load up. The mouse wouldn't work and can't even manually try and open the start menu. Control-Alt-DEL doesn't work to shut down, it has to be manually shut down, and then will turn itself back on after a period of time. I did manage to get it to start up in safe mode, the mouse works fine there, however I can't get my virus scanner to work. Is it possible to back up some of my personal files and re-install windows while in safe mode?

I suppose, but there are other, less drastic options to explore - - you might benefit from restoring an earlier version of the registry

From Safe Mode, 'Run' you can enter:

scanreg /restore

... and select a recent backup

I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter.
