okay i need a little help with my start up problems. about two weeks ago i noticed that my comp was getting kinda laggy so i turned it off and on without shut down then when i turn it back on the screen where it checks the status of the c drive does not come on. Next scan disk appears and scans throughly and once that is done i log in and heres the trouble. First when i click on the start tab the start bar doesn't come up,not even if i press ctrl+esc. secondly the background on my desktop is all is not how it is suppose to be. Third i'm suppose to have plenty of icons on my desktop but alot of them are not there. Secondly when i try to go to my computer it doesn't show any of the icons in the my computer screen but the bottom of the my computer screen recognizes that there are 7 files. also a message keeps on popping up saying that there is a problem with active x and system security so the page may not be displayed properly. Lastly programs such as messenger and internet explorer aren't running and the comp won't load any of my files that i have downloaded or saved. I don't know if it matters but i'm running a wireless network for internet connection at my house. Please help thanks in advance

Have you tried booting the system in to Safe Mode and then shutting down several times. Often allows Windows ME to recover some errors like this. While in Safe Mode, try running Scan Disk again.

More likely, when you allowed ScanDisk to run and "fix errors" the first time, it made some wrong decisions and corrupted your system files. If that happened, you will have to re-install Windows ME over the top of itself. You may need your systems ProductKey code. Search for ProductKey in the Registry. Then from Safe Mode or booting from a Windows ME startup diskette, run the C:\Windows\Options\Install folder's SETUP program. This will start the Windows ME install process. Make sure you manually change the install folder back to C:\Windows if it selects a different one.

This should correct many of your problems. When the install is done, you will need to do a REPAIR of IE.

To REPAIR IE 6.0, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove icon, and select (highlight) the entry for "Microsoft Internet Explorer ... and Internet Tools" and then click the Add/Remove button at the bottom of the window. On the options window, select the "Repair Internet Explorer" option and click OK. When it is done reboot the system.

Next you will need to go to the Microsoft Windows Update site, and download any/all Windows ME and Security updates again.
