Hello,
Please feel free to ask as many questions as you need.
I download an update for an old computer's windows me OS.
The update was Direct X 9.0A.
After I did the system froze.
Then I ran a restart. It froze again at the wallpaper screen (with out any interface into windows.).
Then I tried safe mode and all the safe mode variations. No luck.
I'm very worried about this because my Father has vital documents on this hard drive and he's very disturbed by my ignorant carelessness. And for putting his files in jeopardy.

I hear this is a Mini-OS I can use on a CD to do stuff with.
I tried to download this but I can't figure out what to download - When I click download and pick a FTP - I come to a page that lists a ton of files - I don't know if I'm suposed to download them all or just a single one.

The .iso you need to download is this one...
KNOPPIX_V3.7-2004-12-08-EN.iso 09-Dec-2004 20:31 699M
It's right down the bottom of the page...

Hi, Prudent.
You are trying to fix this the wrong way.
Knoppix IS an operating system that runs from a CD. The problem is... it's about 698mb (NOT Mini) and it comes as an ISO file (mine did anyway). It's 2gb compressed. To fix your problem, I would use a start-up disc and try.....
A:\SCANREG FIX
if that does not work, try....
A:\SCANREG RESTORE
Pick a date before your update.
If that does not work, you will have to slave the faulty drive to a working machine and copy the files over, before burning to a CD-R.An alternative fix (which I have never tried) would be to re-name the Directx folder via DOS to direct-. If Windows can't find Directx, Windows may load up???? Best to wait for another bod to see if I'm talking rubbish.... or method in my madness.

Thank you michael2. I'm going to try those tips out.
Feel free to list as many more ideas you can think of too.
michael2 & Wombat is a knight - you can too

Great NEWS!
It worked
"A:\SCANREG FIX"
I ran this command at the A prompt after I used a WinMe Boot Disk. And then I was able to run the reg scan and then it said it fixed some errors.
I restarted the computer and now! Yes! It works

michael2 you have no idea what a great person you are. I have posted this problem on more then 6 other forums. Only you and only one other person came up with these ideas. If only there were more people like you the whole world would be a better place :). And with your help there *is* hope. :D
As you can tell I'm very very very very happy. I thank you sir. And I can't thank you enough as you can also tell :D

I'm glad it worked for you and thanks for posting back. Anyone else seeing this post with the same problem may also have a lucky break.
BTW, Newgrl (who used to post on here a few years back) helped me with a problem on my PC. I owe her loads......
