start menu problem

Hi,
I have a small but annoying problem with my start menu. Sometimes, the contents of the rectangle in the taskbar that says "Start" and the vertical "Win Me" display in the start menu disappear. They are replaced with colored textures. I realized that the colors I see are from the background image and they change as the background changes.
This started happening about a month ago. I does not effect the operation of the computer, but it is annoying. I updated my Norton Antivirus and ran it, but no virus was detected.
Do you have any ideas of what this might be? Thanks for your help. Liz
