Stalled installation

I tried to update to IE5.5 the other day, only for the installation to stall at 68% (U don't know if this %age is significant or not). I had to shut down to get out of it. When I rebooted i was prompted to restart the incomplete installation, which I did. It stalled again at 68%. Tried a third time, but chose a custom install. This time it stalled at 90%. I have no idea what to do next. Can I delete the downloaded installation files? What changes have been made to my system? I know that my System Restore fails now, so that's one change. Any advice out there?
