Hi roomys,
I recently d/lded a site called PURITY SCAN (sear1) presumably a scan aid for PORN SPAM------but alas----it is now clear to me this is not true--it happens to be an advertising bot sending me pop-ups every 2 mins which has become so annoying. In my endeavours to eradicate this pesky thing (to no avail yet) I have d/lded 2 spyware removers which have removed everything else except this.I run AD-AWARE (latest) which does not detect it.Others I have used r SPYBOT (no luck)SPYHUNTER (which registers it's presence) but now it says I cant remove unless I buy the FULL VERSION. I have also got GOOGLE BLOCKER which it overides.-----I run WINDOWS ME 20gb 128 ram AMD DURON
I am the type that likes to learn by having a go at fixing things 1st but after a wasted SUNDAY I admit this has beaten me.While writing this I have had 20 pop ups
------ANY IDEAS GREATLY APPRECIATED -----TY BARBARA

Did you fully update Spybot S&D before running its' check for problems?

SSD should pick up this Purity Scan thing, I think.

I will try to find info.

Spyhunter is a scam...You better be careful about downloading a bunch of "spyware killers" some of them are loaded with spyware themselves.

CWShredder might kill this malware:

You might also try this:

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

Get the free version and create an account so they can email you the activation code which you will need late in the installation/update process.

Dealing with/preventing the arrival of assorted pests (incl. high-jackers, trojans etc.) can be found via these posts: credits to SVG/The Count/Mesich/KTTD/DAVEINCAPS etc. who are well up on these issues.

There is some inevtiable duplication across these references; but worth to browse them all regardless.

Hi KHIRA, Leroi, Trvlr, hello everyone

Didn't find much on the net about the PuritanScan garbage so I installed it.

I launched Internet Explorer and sure enough about every two minutes an annoying popup.

Here is what I found after installing it.

It creates two registry keys.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
ContentService C:\Windows\System32\winservn.exe

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\PurityScan

It creates this folder.

C:\Program Files\PurityScan

It also installs this executable file.

C:\Windows\System32\winservn.exe

To remove it I delete the registry entries and restarted the computer. I then deleted the folder and file above.

I reinstalled it and ran an Updated Spybot as suggested by Leroi and it also detected it and removed the said items.

Best Regards,
Mesich

That's service "above and beyond the call of duty"...

Hats off to U for another determined effort to resolve/defeat another of these pests!!!

(Hope/trust this test/experiment was on a non-critical PC...?)
