About once a week, I wake up to find out my computer has reverted to wallpaper, links, etc. that I have over a year ago. When I restart it fixes itself, but this is irritating. I tried to reset the system restore utility, but it has done it again twice since then.

All suggestions gratefully accepted.

After checking for spyware and virus, run the DELINDEX.BAT file to clean up your system. See ME Fixes for links, instructions and other thing to do later.

What you are seeing is REGISTRY file corruption. I have seen a problem with Windows ME, where the Registry gets corrupted and becomes too BIG, to the point that minor changes cause the old "corrupted" parts to become active. When you reboot, if windows finds the current registry corrupted, it reloads the prior working copy.

Suggest you do the following:

Reboot the system and make sure it is OK.

RUN - SCANREGW, it will check the Registry and then asks you if you want to make a backup. Have it make a fresh backup.

Reboot the system and run SCANREGW again an make a second backup.

Make sure you have folders set to show hidden files and navigate to the hidden C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP folder.

Check the size of the rb00#.CAB files (these are the system registry backup files. There should be 5 of them. Normally they should be around 2MB in size. If they are around 8MB in size, it indicates a major corruption problem. It may be necessary to reformat and re-install to fix the problem.
But you can try and use REGCLEAN.exe to clean the registry. See RegClean for download links and install instructions. Run this program to clean your system's registry file and then run SCANREGW again.
