I don't use the battery for this laptop so I do not need any power management, right. Don't play DVD's or CD's, just listening to an occassional email that has sound.

Hi Nancy, just checked the spec on your pc. Its a p3/500mhz processor. Not a fast processor but with all you have running I suggest putting in another stick of memory. this will release resources for much more immediate need. Put in a further 256mb of memory. Do you ever empty the temporary internet folder or cookies and defrag the hdd. This makes a chunk of difference to speed too.Let me know if more info needed.

You may be able to make your own determination:

SysInfo.org - Startup Applications List

Task List Programs

Norton (Symantec) is somewhat top heavy and may be a strain on the system

fwiw - more RAM, while invariably suggested, is not necessarily the answer - in my opinion, you've got plenty already

I've a sorry little 200MHz, WinME with about 96 MB - runs like the proverbial top

I routinely run spy-bot, defrag, empty temp. files, don't save photos, etc to this laptop. When I purchased this was 128 and I upgrade to 256. Are there any programs that I can close that you see!

That's really up to you to research & decide

... at a glance:

TaskMonitor

PCHealth

LoadQM

.. would not likely be missed

In addition to the above:

SPC_W (NETZERO)

EnSonigMixer

msnappau

possibly:

SSDPSRV

Do some research before disabling anything you're not sure of

Hellz Yea!

You can turn off these programs by typing in the run dialogue box msconfig. Then going to the tab labled startup (i think it's to the left of the environmental tab) uncheck the ones you don't want, restart. Then it brings a box saying you've done seletive startuo, simply check the box and hit ok.

However if some functions of Norton are turned off with this simply reenable them through the same method, but make sure they are norton related. Other junk just slows everything down.

My, how very... selective

Scanregistry (Scanregw.exe) should *not* be disabled

Some things are actually necessary or at least important - others... not so much, or else a matter of preference or convenience

That's good - generally, you don't need a whole lot running in the background, and WinME (like previous versions of Windows) also has a limited amount of System Resources

Scanreg is important as that is your registry backup - you never know when you might need to rollback to recover from some problem.

While msconfig can be used to stop unwanted startups, often you can disable from the particular application's options, depending

Unless you know that you have need of Universal Plug and Play (SSDPSRV), then you can uninstall it through add/remove programs > windows setup > communications > details > uncheck Universal Plug and Play > finish and wait for the process to complete > reboot. If something stops working correctly (it shouldn't), you can reverse the process above to reinstall it.

It may be a security risk and is often detected by firewall tests as a certain trojan (can't remember the name right now).
