My Computer is 1Ghz and mostly everytime i get on the net the speeds drop. Its usual speed is 56000bps now its at 26400bps.

when you pick up that phone line and listen to it, is there static and distortion? once i had the same problem and the phone company just came out and replaced something, they said it is sometimes caused by bad weather

Your computer could be 200ghz, this has nothing to do with the speed of your modem and the quality of the hardware from your phone jack to the web. Number of things it could be. Maybe your isp has a few hundred new members using the dial up number your on. Try changing dial up numbers. How do you know your modems speed is usually 56000? i thought phone lines could only support 46k or something like that. 56K on the box is baloney.

the max speed for 56K modem is 53K... you should not connect with your new computer slower than you did with your old one... if you connect slower or losing connection then call the computer manufacturer and resolve that within the waranty

the connection speed of a computer is related to many things. but the speed of the processor is not one of them. with all due respect to regards miro, if this is a new pc it might well connect slower than an old one and still have nothing wrong with it. some mfg, like hp and compaq in particular, use bargin basement components to bring the prices of the box down. you get what you pay for. even the vaunted gateway has had problems with their low end pc's and the isb (internet service btch) aol. enough that microsoft has had to devote many pages in their knowledge base to try and deal with aol's crappy code.
be that as it may, the cause might be environmental. dirty lines can cause poor connections as well as crappy isp's.

juneau... windows ME has a serious issue with WDM modems... if the new computer was sold with a WDM modem and there are problems with connection speed or disconects then it is waranty issue and the modem should be replaced with a modem that works with windows ME operating system.... if the computer manufacturer is cutting the corners then it is his risk to replace the modem... many people do not notice that the speed is lower... but i would not accept paying for a 56K modem and having installed something that connects at 26400

Depends also on the modem you're connecting to. If the available modem at your ISP is a 28K or 36K, some of the smaller ISP's still use these, you could easily come in at 26 or 34 something (your modem slows to the available modem speed). Kids are out of school and online, etc, this could be tying up the faster modems. Try using another dial in number as suggested above. Check with your ISP and see if they have a preferred line for 56K connection. Also, your phone line could be going bad. The only connection between CPU speed and internet speed is in bringing up your browser and displaying the information received.

regards miro, i know quite well what a winmodem is, and that they are prolific in todays bottom end pc's. the connection speed of the modem is not realted to millennium or the drivers. the problem with the modems that i refer to here is that they tend to be more sensitive to issues like line noise.
just because the modem is advertised as a 56k, only means that it is capable. it is not a guarantee that you would get such a connection or even anything close. considering the variables involved no pc builder with more than two brain cells rubbing together would make such a guarantee let alone warranty a functional modem because it failed to connect to the customers satisfaction to any of the literally millions of isp's out there. more likely the manufacturer would point the user to the isp or the phone company.
were i a commercial pc builder, i wouldn't use such a modem in the first place. if you ask anyone who does isp tech support they'll tell you the same thing. they're junk and they are responsible for a large number of the connection problems that occur. as far as blaming the oem, well good luck with that! you get what you pay for. if you buy a cheap pc then that's exactly what you get.

I'm surprised no one came up with this suggestion:
"Get rid of the dial-up connection"!!
Seriously your 56k modem is ONLY capable of providing 53k speeds. Why not check your local telephone company or cable TV company. Cable or DSL high speed is the way to go. It usually costs approx $49.99 month but is worth the 10+ times faster speed than you get with the dial up.
