speaker icon and sound is gone

although the speakers are plugged in and work on other computer,the sound and speaker icon on this computer have mysteriously dissappeared.
short of restoring computer to an earlier time, how do i fix the sound?

Click start, settings, control panel, sounds and multimedia. Ensure that " Show volume control in taskbar" is checked.

I went to start>settings> control panel> sounds and multimedia--what you said what not there and my speakers still don't work

Try going to start> settings> control panel>
multimedia and under the "audio" tab there should be the checkbox that Jarge mentioned.

go look in device manager
any problems? yellow ? .
try removeing sound card from device manager and reboot

Restoring the default settings in the Bios has cured that problem on more than one occasion for me.

I am anable to klick there,where it says show volume control in taskbar,it will not light up,so what can I due now,Please tell me more.thank you Rita Jaenicke.
