My sound will not work. I had been trying to get my on-board sound to work, but went and bought a new card thinking it'd work... it did not.

Device manger says my new one is installed and everything is ok as does Devices tab in Sounds control panel. BUT, sounds ctrl panel other than devices thinks I have no sound card. Dxdiag.exe thinks I have no sound card installed either.

I downloaded the latest DirectX 9 and it still does this. It gives me some error about dvpsetup.exe and going to add/remove to fix it. I read on other sites about the known Microsoft problem with this program and did what they said but with no avail.

My computer knows I have the devices for the card loaded but thinks I still have no sound card... WTF is up with this!! I need my sound! *crys*

Could the fact that Microsoft only installed an update be to blame? I mean, if some older DX files are to blame then the update might not have changed them.

Any ideas?

Don't cry. Did you disable your onboard sound?
Another try might be to reinstall Me on top of the current installation (make the directory to install to Windows, not Windows.000 et al) then try it. Next, reinstall directx 9.0b and try it again. Gotta be something missing or corrupt here. Odd that Me is unable to use two different sound cards.

As you state your sound is installed, have you checked the Volume Controls, right click speaker Icon on TaskBar

SkipCox:
This comp was a bundle and thus only has a restore disk.

x86:
...trust me that is not the problem. lol I am a little beyond that level of noobishness.

Same problem I have.Lost onboard sound, loaded new drivers for it,have no problems in device manager, and still no sound.I reinstalled windows and no sound.I removed all onboard sound, disabled in bios, installed new sound card and drivers, checked my sound level in volume controls,no problems in device manager,it shows up in the device manager and add/remove,my speakers have been checked, and I still have no sound. If anyone has the answer, let me know.Otherwise I am going to trash this one and buy a new one without millenium!

Katrina,
Did you try the restore disk?

or, you should be able to find this folder:

C:\windows\options\install should be on your harddrive. You should be able to reinstall from there.

james,
Don't know. Try Trev's site, How to run Windows Me well, version 5. See Nos 7,8, 15, 17, and 18.

If you have a jumper on the motherboard for this your user manual should guide you to it.

I've had the same problem only with the sound drivers on my ASUS A7N266-VM
I've done just about everything I can think of, removed the devices, installed latest nForce unified drivers, reinstalled DX9.0b I even installed windows as a brand new installation on another hard drive and its doing the same thing there.
Any ideas?

I didn't have an option in my bios for it. Mine has onboard nForce2 sound, the computer recognises it, it just keeps saying that the Ntkern.vxd could not load it. I'm at a complete loss and neither nVidia or Asus have any documentation on it.
So far I've spent 2 days solid of my week's vacation messing with this. :(

YOUR problem might be solvable... tell me, did you reinstall drivers from Nvidia's website or Asus'???

If using the Asus a7n8x board (or whatever yer using) you MUST install the all in one drivers off of Asus' site and not Nvidia. Despite a lower version number on Asus' site, they are still the correct ones. (they are edited Nvidia ones)

Of course, this all doesn't help me as I already figured this out and implimented it.

Thanks Katrina,
I read on nForcersHQ.com that Win98 (which is what I'm running) isn't supported at all by the nForce and that with alot of hassle you can get them going on Win98SE.
I had tried both the ASUS A7N266-VM drivers from ASUS's website and the reference drivers from nVidia's site, and even some really old ones as well thinking maybe the newer ones just wouldn't work on my board.
No luck on any of these fronts.
:T

I'm not going to waste day 3 of my vacation worrying about it tho....although I think I have a copy of WinME laying around somewhere.
Well maybe I'll just waste it a little.
Doh, another day going to be shot in the bum.
