Well, my sound doesn't work. I checked the device manager and it says the sound card is working properly. I checked the sounds and multi media and looked up devices. It said for the audio "...Driver is enabled but inactive due to unknown problem..." Should I remove the device? If I do will windows reinstall it? Please help!

Did you try reinstalling the Soundcard drivers as JackG suggested?

Bill.

I'm ok.

Yes, I reinstalled the sound card, nothing. Should I delete the devices in sound and mutimedia. And yes, I updated the driver online, no luck. Should I follow this advice I found on an old forum

I think I know what you need to do.
I've been researching this same problem for days and I finally found the answer in another page in this forum.

Click on Start/Run, type msconfig then enter. Select the Tab that says System.ini. Highlight the 'Boot' section and click the new button.
Add the line: drivers=mmsystem.dll

Reboot your system and if you have the correct drivers for WinME, it should work. I was just about to give up when I tried this.

I hope this helps. I was so glad to finally find the answer, I just wanted to pass it on.

Please Help! Amy

That's pretty good advice from Sandy, the line : drivers=mmsystem.dll may do the trick by itself. Check the following entries are also there under [boot]

system.drv=system.drv
sound.drv=mmsound.drv

And, under [drivers]

wave=mmsystem.dll
midi=mmsystem.dll

So, modify your system.ini, reboot and let us know.

Bill.

I'm ok.

Sandy,
I want to personally thank you for that solution to the
"DRIVER IS ENABLED BUT INACTIVE DUE TO AN UNKOWN PROBLEM"
I added drivers=mmsystem.dll
to the system.ini file and windows 98 se
now gives me sound through my Ensoniq pci sound card.
THANKS!

I tried this and made it worse. My mouse would not even work after adding the line. I have the exact same problem with the sound.
What did i do wrong?
