Sometimes, for no reason whatsoever, my sound on my computer just stops working. I reboot my computer and it doesn't help. Then it just comes back. It's been coming and going for quite some time now. I tried system restore, but no effect. It's nothing wrong with my speakers or anything like that though because I checked. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

Howdy, Ya could have a bad sound card. Until you replace it with another for testing, you aren't going to know. If you have the funds, take it to a local shop and let them diag. it but it would be cheaper to just go out and purchase a cheap sound card, if you go to a place like Best Buy our Circut City, you can return the card within 30 days if it doesn't fix the problem.

You did not say whether you have on-board sound or a sound card (or both). If you have only on-board sound, good luck. It may take a new motherboard and/or drivers. Even that may not do it. I gave up trying to get the on-board sound on my machine working - many problems similar to yours - and installed a sound card. If you have both, be sure to disable the on-bord sound (BIOS setup at startup) and delete the drivers Add/elete progrms). Also, check for IRQ conflicts. Some sound cards are very finicky about sharing the IRQ.

I too, have a sound problem [recording]...

brand new HP n5190 [back in Jan] laptop.

Windows ME...

new headset with mic...

all audio works great...

just can't use the recording or talk over the net...

have tried three different head/mic sets...

have verified mic on in software via, msn, yahoo, etc...

most of time when checking for mic on in software I find the setting pegged out...

I bring the associated volumns down and still no help.

did not have any problems with a Dell laptop that I used and formatted and installed software.

did not have any problems with a HP n3190 laptop except the hard drive crashed while on the net one evening.

hard to believe the sound card was defective from the factory????????????????????????????
