Ryan, guess I'm a little confused. Try start and see if you can get to your control panel and get to sounds from there. Be sure you have a sound card installed (start>programs>accessories>system tools>system information will tell you) and that it's enabled with nothing muted. If it presents you the adjustment screen, see if you can raise any low volume setting and thus hear the sound(s).
Another thing that you might take a look at is the startup menu. You can choose whether or not to show the speaker icon in your quicklauch tray. If it's there, you can double click the icon to get to the screen described before.
HTH.

If any device in Device Manager is fitted but not operating "properly" - usually because of driver problems - then it places a big question mark in front of it! The fact that elsewher on your system it shows devices as "working properly" does not mean they are!!!

I suspect that your computer has "lost" its sound card driver and that you will need to put it in again - do you have the sound card driver disk and /or your motherbosrd disk available?

If you don't know what card you have then go onto the inernet and download something like "Belarc Advisor" and run it - it will give you all the info you need of what's on your compuet and the program security keys. It can be found at

www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Go back to "Sound, video and Game Comtrollers" in Device Manager and RIGHT click on your sound system "SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio" then LEFT click on "Update Drivers". Follow the on screen instructions IF you have problems post back or email me - click on my name at the top of my post. I run WinXP so my screen details are different to yours so if you run into difficulties then get back to me - you cant do anything damaging to your system!

I wonder if I am not understanding what your problem is?? Does the Volume icon appear on your task bar - in the right hand corner of the screen??

Ahhhhhhhhhh!!!! Open Control Panel and scroll down to Sound(s). Remember I run XP so my recollection of earlier operating systems might be a bit dim........ Somewhere in Sounds, I believe, is a window at the bottom of which is a small box which has a tick option for "Show Volume Control on Tasbar" - or something similar: try and find this and tick the box! Then - you may have to restart the system - open it and ensure it is not muted.

Here it is:

Open Control Panel by selecting Settings from the Start menu.
Double-click on the Sounds and Multimedia icon (it's just called Multimedia in Windows 95/98.
Under the Audio tab, in the Playback section, turn on the Show volume control on the taskbar option.
Click OK.

You have 2 OEM Mfg Modem Wave Device entries - usually because the first didn't take, so to speak, so it is put in again and the 2nd clearly did!!

You looked in Sounds and Multimedia/Sounds in Control Panel? No "Show volume control in taskbar"??? The instruction should be there, even if greyed out!!!

OK - greyed out means that it is not available to you! There is a problem with the sound - almost certainly the drivers, regardless of what your system told you earlier! Reopen "Device Manager" and "Sound, video and game controllers". Click on the + sign and RIGHT click on your sound card. Open "Properties" and "Driver". Left click on "Uninstall".
Go back into Device Manager, Sound video and Game Controllers, and RIGHT click on your sound card and then on "Uninstall".

Restart you computer and it should find the sound card again and possibly the "Found new hardware" box will come up. If it does follow the onscreen instructions and put in the driver disk when prompted. Since I believe that your sound is integrated into the motherboard then it is likely that the drivers will be on the motherboard disk, unless you have a specific disk for your sound? If you have problems in understanding the wizard then post back.

Mmmmmm. Let's check what you did.
1. Remove the sound driver
2. Remove the sound device
3. Restart computer
4. Add New Hardware box appeared containing the sound device name
5. "Automatic search for a better driver (recommended)" was selected
6. The disk contaiming the driver was inserted into the CD Rom drive - wait till the disk spins up: maybe 10 or so seconds
7. Left click "Next"
8. When "Windows has finished installing the new hardware device" appears click "Finish"

Is that how it went? Does Device Manager show the sound device?

There is one more method to adopt for ME - post/email when you have returned and we'll try it.

Hi, I run ME on a Dell Optiplex GX1. My volume icon in the right bottom panel suddenly disappeared. I have uninstalled/reinstalled all the audio codec drivers. My 'view icon in syste tray' is checked but grayed out, and even after I change the preferred device it is no good. I get sound when I play a audio CD in my Cd-RW but NOT in my DVD-ROM. Any idea? thanks.

I know in the wacky computer world things happen without any thing done on our part but, just in case, can you recall anything you did just before the sound went out? Did you install any new programs? Did you delete any files? Stuff like that. Also, if you lost sound very recently and you had sound before, can you do a system restore to a time when you had sound? Just a thought.
Angie

PCI sound cards are very afordable and easy to install. Not only will you have better sound it will be more reliable ,I had nothig except problems with my AC97 intergrated sound, sometimes sound ,most of the times no sound ,then I installed a Sonic S90 sound card PCI interface ,and never had a sound problem again ! What ever you decide to do ,good luck !

Ok man i had the same problem as you... no sound icon in system tray and all that stuff. I was searching some other sites for help and one said that in device manager (I use XP by the way) under "sound, video and game controllers" theres something called "Unimodem Half-duplex audio device". well it said to disable that and so i did and rebooted and now sound works properly and you'll be able to do the place volume icon on taskbar or whatever it was called. It won't be greyed out. Well at least it worked for me. Give it a shot

Hi I've recently installed a dvd burner onto my computer. However, now there is no sound at all working. All the audio wires are plugged in and the dvd burner works fine. Yet there is no sound coming out of the computer what so ever. Do you know what I should do to fix this problem?
thanks Tina
