CPU/Ram: 180Mhz~64Mb
Comment:

The sound on this system, for one reason or another, does not work. The sound driver is installed correctly and device manager recognizes it all fine and well, but when I go to sounds and multimedia, I cannot play anything. The arrow is not highlighted. And when I go to select my audio device in the same applet, it is not highlighted, so I cannot select any device. I've booted into safe mode, and no other devices exsist.

I've had 2 errors about kernel32.dll come up. I don't remember what action i took to get the first one, but the 2nd one was from when I opened dxdiag.

Kernel32.dll has caused an error in mmsystel.dll

Dxdiag has caused an error in Kernel32.dll

Any help is grately appreciated!!

I am assuming you have taken the system into safe mode and removed all enteries under Sound Video and Game Controllers and let windows rest the driver?

I have exactly the same problem as TechQuest. After installing RealOne Player my sound card (YMF743, Yamaha on board) did not show up again under: Control Panel>>>Sounds & Multimedia>>>Audio>>>Sound Playback>>Preferred Device
It is recognized, though, since it can be found under: system/device manager. Diagnose programs, however, mostly do not find it.I have the latest driver installed. But no sound...

Try this:
Boot into Safe Mode and remove Multimedia from Windows Setup as follows: (Note: you may need the Windows 98SE installation CD)
-Go to: Start>Settings>Control Panel, 2x clk: Add/Remove Programs.
-Choose the Windows Setup Tab.
-In the list of installed components uncheck Multimedia.
-Click Apply, OK, close Control Panel.

Next, remove media resources entries from the Registry. Back up Registry first!!!
-Start>Run, key in: Regedit
-Expand to: Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\
Control\MediaResources
-Under this key, click once on the yellow folder before: Aux
-Press Delete on the keyboard
-Click: Yes to confirm key delete
Do the same for the following folders: Midi, Mixer, and Wave.

Next, remove any sound driver remnants:
-Right click: My Computer, choose Properties
-Click on Device Manger tab
-Click on: (+) Sound, Video, and Game Controllers to expand
-Remove all sound related items under this category by selecting the desired item and clicking: Remove
Once all items are removed, Sound, Video, and Game Controllers no longer appears in the list.

Now, reboot, and reinstall the Sound Card Drivers.
(As Windows reboots it redetects the sound card and partially reinstalls multimedia components.)

Next, reinstall the Multimedia component as follows:
-Start>Settings>Control Panel, 2x clk: Add/Remove Programs
-Choose: Windows Setup tab
-In the list of installed components check Multimedia, click: Apply, OK, and close Control Panel.

Check your Sound.
