Please...advice needed.
I have a Winme..I had sound and then turned off the speakers...for sometime....a few months actually...well when I decided I wanted to hear something I turned them back on...the light on the speaker comes on...but I still get no sound...midia player doesn't produce sound tho I can see the slider moving...can't hear cd in slot....so
can I get this 'sound blaster card' and I will be able to hear, play, and create sound? Any special (card) one needed? Yes, I am pc illiterate :-) but slowly learning.

Check that the connections between the speakers and your sound card are properly intact, i.e. the wire that goes into the back of the PC from the speakers.

If that doesn't solve the problem, right click on My Computer and go to properties, then device manager and scroll down till you see sound video and game controllers. Click on the little x beside it to expand the list. Remove whatever sound controller is there and reboot the PC. Windows should reinstall it. Try the sound again.

If it's still gone, you could consider a Soundblaster sound card. There are many different types but a basic Creative Soundblaster is probably all you need unless you anticipate listening to loud music or DVDs which you want to be in hi-fi quality. The basic soundblasters are cheap and usually come with their own speakers.

If it's still gone

Trev-hello
First, let me say, your homepage is 'very' helpful.
Now...I did as per your second suggestion, the pc found another 'driver'? to load.
As the new driver was loading...I received this notice: smwdm.sys...file could not be found...and so the loading of 'new' driver could not be completed.
So, I guess it is off today to buy a sound card.
thanks for your help! much appreciated
