I'm recently having a problem connecting to internet with my Sony VAIO PCG-QR1/BP + Conexant-Ambit Soft56 Data Fax ICH Modem. This may not be because of the VAIO model but rather COM port or modem issue or even Windows ME. The problem is, devices for modem, HSFMODEMWDM and port disappeared all of sudden and since then even if I reinstalled all those devices, those disappear very often or even if they stay, I just cannot connect the modem. If I try to connect it displays msg either #630 or #666. When I try to check the modem status from Control Panel, it says "port already open" or "port cannot be opened." So I checked Microsoft and VAIO sites for troubleshooting and tried things recommened but so far no luck. I even reinstalled WinMe from scratch but things do get better. Does anyone have any idea on this? Is there a possibility that the modem is dead or else? Thanks

Device manager doesn't simply show those devices. Specifically, the followings are the ones disappeared (originally those are in Japanese): | + HSFMODEMWDM + Generic PCI Modem Emulator | + Port (COM & LPT) + Comm port (COM1) | + Modem + Conexant-Ambit Soft56 Data, Fax ICH Modem If those don't disapear, I could see 2 COM ports in Control Panel - Modem that COM1 and COM3. COM3 is the one the modem is linked. But for the search result in the modem property for COM3 show a message that Port is already open.
