System: Windows Millennium Edition
First of all, thank you to all those who are reading this.
Anyways, I tried restoring Internet Explorer 6 to the older version. I went to Start>Setting>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. I selected Internet Explorer 6 and I clicked on the uninstall button. After it did so, it told me to restart the computer so that the uninstallation process will be complete. After it restarted however, this error message immediately came up:
"Explorer has caused an error in SHELL32.DLL..."Then, the screen just goes blank and there is absolutely NOTHING on the screen except for the background. I tried using the Recovery CD and restoring it to factory condition but it didn't work for some weird reason.
I don't know what to do. It's hopeless. I am totally panicking. If someone could PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me solve my problem, I would appreciate it so very, very much! Please help me!
Thank you for your time.

The problem you've got here is that you've tried to run a recovery on the system after receiving an error after uninstalling an application. Recovery programs usually run in one or more flavours. Either they reinstall the operating system without formatting the hard drive, or they do. Some of them also repartition the hard drive in the process. Did you see any indication that the hard drive was being formatted or repartitioned?
Even if it wasn't, the recovery program would have overwritten critical system files.Have you got a Windows ME (or Win98) startup floppy? If you have, boot the machine with that in the drive and at the A: prompt, type
"format c: /u" (without quotes) and hit Enter. Confirm that you want to proceed by typing "Y" and hitting Enter. If at this juncture you see the message "Invalid Drive Specification" (or words to that effect), it means the partition(s) have been deleted, but not recreated. Hopefully, that won't happen. If it does, post another message here.
After the drive has been formatted, run the Recovery program again and it should work. Once the machine boots to the desktop, go here and download IE5.5 with SP1. Then go to the Windows Update site and download the "Critical Updates" package that you'll find there. In my considered opinion IE5.5 with SP2 doesn't run properly on Win ME besides being riddled with security holes. As for IE6.0, the problems it causes far outweigh the benefits and I would recommend to anybody that they avoid it like the plague.

Actually i have a way better idea, when the system goes blank, right click on the task bar at the bottom, click properties, click advanced tab, click Add, click browse, double click windows folder, double click windows update set up files folder, right click on ie6setup.exe, and click open, this will install ie6 again, with everything in tact, no need to system recover, when all you need is a browser to look at files once its installed, you can do a system restore to go back a day or 2, any comments, email me

Oh and one more thing, when the error mesage pops up, (shell32.dll) dont hit ok, go staright to the task bar and right click, and properties, and do the above instructions,

To: "liquid"
But there is no taskbar on the screen. It's just a background with no icons, taskbars, nothing...

when the error mesage pops up, (shell32.dll) DONT HIT OK, go staright to the task bar and right click, and properties, and do the above instructions

if the task bar isnt there yet, let the pc load, it will keep loading in the back ground, and the task bar will load, it has to, because all your missing is an ie6, not the task bar, or systray

if you would like you can add me to your aol buddy list (spaclqd) and i will put you in my tech support folder
