I recently created a how to with the help of others here at computing.net to resolve the thumbnail hijacking. The instructions left by lesley in the post your referring to are alot easier.
I was wondering if lesleys advice is a better route to take.

Try this:
START/Run/type: regsvr32 thumbvw.dll
It'll either work or it won't!
