Sluggish Windows ME

I have a Sony Vaio FX-140 and recently found it necessary to reinstall the files on my hard drive. I used the System Recovery cds and followed all the instructions. Now, even though I have not yet installed all the programs that were on there before, the computer is running exceptionally slow. It takes 5+ minutes for a webpage to open [The NY Times, for example] and up to 7 hours to download the IE6 upgrade. I ran scandisk; defragmented; cleaned disk. My system resources are 71% free. I use a 56k modem dial-up connection. A desktop I use shows no slowdown in performance [I use the same provider], so it's probably not Earthlink's fault. Any suggestions?

Have you tried deleting cookies, temp internet files and all the files in WINDOWS temp folder? If not try that, I usually find it speeds things up You could also try the repair IE option in add/remove too

That also sounds like maybe your modem isn't set correctly, or you ISP is having problems.
