Comment:

I have a Dell Dimension 4100/20GBHD/128MRam.
Whenever the computer is on for more than an hour or so, Everything slows down. The mouse gets choppy; music gets choppy; the clock down in the corner of the screen slows down. I hear of people who leave their computer all the time. I can't even leave mine on overnight. The only way to fix it is to reboot and then its ok for another hour. Ive been searching this site for a while now and have seen people with the same problem, but none of the solutions given have been of benefit to my computer????? Any help would be appreciated

Also, when i first boot up I check the system resources. Start-accesories-system information. It says i have 127.5MB of Total Physica Memory, but only 160KB of Available Physical Memory. It shows this small amount even though i just booted up. I don't understand.

You might want to have someone more familiar with PCs handle re-formatting your hard disk. Just make sure that you make backup copies of all your important files on floppy disks or zip disks before anyone touches your machine. RE-FORMATTING YOUR HARD DRIVE WILL ERASE YOUR ENTIRE HARD DRIVE AND ALL OF YOUR FILES SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SAVED EVERYTHING YOU NEED!!! Good luck!

Ryan, dont jump the gun, wait with reformating.
-call DELL tech support about that.
-Check your device maneger for any conflicts
-Rightclick on My Computer and look into Properties and Performance for how much free resources you have after rebooting
-when it slows down pres cntrlaltdel and write down what is running
- do msconfig and uncheck everything except systry, you might leave also powerprofile, you can always check back things if you think you need them
- disable system restore
- disable full time virus protection and run it on demand only when you really need it
these things will make your windwos ME work almost as good as windows 98 (providing your hardware is ok)

dont waste time on dell tech support. it's a
software problem not a hardware one. dell has no obligation to fix a software error.

I have calle Dell in the past with this problem but the never solved the problem. I have had my system resources up to 96% after reboot. They had me uncheck everything except Systray and ScanRegistry. They told me I need those two checked. Still never solved my slow computer! I did notice that something called Devldr.16.exe kept checking itself as soon as i rebooted. System Restore is Disabled. I also heard Norton Antivirus will slow things down. I tried removing it completely but still the system slows down. I could not find any conflicts except Error Code 22 in the system information menu, but i've heard this is common with Me. I hope you can make sense of what I writing. I appreciate Your help Miro.

Ryan, what is your soundcard, i think that file has something to do with the SB Live soundcard.
Back the file up, and delete it from windows see what happens. (you might need to do it in safe mode or dos, the file is probably used)
I would still recmmend talking with DELL, but next time tell them that you are recording the phone conversation, that way they will assign somebody qualified on your case

Hi Ryan:

You might want to look into that .5MB of missing RAM. If the RAM is dedicated to onboard Video (which I suspect it is), there should be a BIOS setting that will let you set that up a bit. If not, consider a Video Card of at least 8MB. If you are doing any gaming look at cards with 32MB. The problem might also arise that your Dell has onboard AGP, and will probably not have an AGP slot. This will mean PCI video cards only, and will limit your choices a great deal.

Good Luck to You

TimeRider DELL is decent enough company that would not put .5 meg as dedicated video, they dont use the shared memory, i guess you did not work on enough of them ;-)
http://www.dell.com/us/en/dhs/offers/specials_3x_special64.htm
as i suspected it is SB Live sound card that is probably the culprit.
I think it is andother of windows ME little jokes played on us.

Ryan, call tech support, get a case number, record the phone conversation and insist on a fix. Document your problem well, write certified letters return receit requested. Thats the only way how you will get the problem fixt in real time. Nobody on this board will be probably able to help you.

Nope . . . never worked on too many Dell's. I worked on a fairly new HP last week though that allowed for 512kb or 1MB. I was pretty floored by that. He was having the same type of problems though. I know that the Inspiration is the lower end of the Dell spectrum, however I'm not sure which model.

I hope your fix works for him.

Miro,
I have now located the problem. It was that file devldr16.exe. that kept rechecking itself upon startup. What I did was go to mscongig and uncheck everything except Scanregistry and Systray. Then rebooted. Once the computer was running I immediately pressed Alt-CTRl-Delete and of course devldr.16 was RUNNING. I clicked it and hit ENDTASK and then used my computer for the next five hours and GUESS WHAT, it has been running fine ever since. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME SINCE I BOUGHT THIS THING FROM DELL THAT I DIDN"T HAVE TO REBOOT AFTER AN HOUR. I am quite certain now that this is the source of the problem. Now I just have to figure out what to do with this file. Since I have been coming to this forum I have seen many people with the same problem that I have and complaining of SLOWWWW MILLENIUM--Could this be the source of many of their problems too. Once again thanks for the help guys. Thanks MIRO.

Ryan, i dont know what it does. I am not an expert ;-)... I just looked it up at some of our computers at work and after i deleted it the sound seemed to work same as before... but we have windows2000... either take a little risk and delete it(after backing it up!!!) and see what happens... or hammmer on DELL tech support ( i would try that first)...they should have their act in order now with windows ME..... i dont have that file on my computer because i dont have SBLive soundcard... but had my share of problems also

Device Loader for 16 bit sound support of some type . . . maybe DOS emulation?

Miro,

I searched for the file and when I found it I did take a little risk and deleted to the recycle bin. My sound does seem to be the same as before, but won't let me open any of the Sound Blaster Live programs such as SB Live Experience or Audio HQ. But I haven't opened them since I bought my computer so I guess I can live without them. Devldr16 no longer comes on startup as soon as I bootup so I guess I can almost consider the problem solved????

Hey Ryan;

Have you tried downloading the latest Me drivers from Creative Labs? Maybe the original drivers are immature and are creating problems . . .

I have Soundblaster Live Value digital 1024 software. It's version 5.12.01.3037.

That driver you said is not applicable for soundblaster version 5.1

Ryan, if you lived till now witheout SB Live Experience or Audio HQ and dont intend to use it in the future just wait. Keep that devldr file backed up somwhere. You can periodiacally bug DELL for update on that issue to keep them on their toes... hehehe... maybe there will be fix before the XP comes out... after?... i doubt that they will be developing any new stuf for ME after XP is out.. after all, they already have your money ;-)

Hi Ryan;

There is a sound card called SoundBlaster Live Platinum 5.1, they are referring to the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound support not the current driver version. The drivers they have will work with the SB Live Value, which is the low end SoundBlaster (still a hell of a card by the way!).

I have the SB Live Value and used these drivers. My card was an early release and only included Win98 Drivers which will not work in Me because of the change in Realmode support.

Have a good day!

Hey Guys,
I am having one hell of a time with ME...I am also getting really slow activity from ME, tons of error messages and am actully noticing that files are disappearing. I just realized that my enitre McAfee program doesn't exist on my computer anymore. I am trying to uninstall ME and reload Win 98....problem is I can't seem to get to DOS mode to format my C: drive...who can tell me how to do that...and not from the Start Menu...cause that way I am still using my C: and it won't let me format.

Thanx!

Associated with Creative Labs sound cards. Provides audio support for DOS applications. If you don't have those, you don't need this.
