Slow DNS Resolution

Comment:

MUCH too often (usually every few minutes), my Win ME desktop takes a long time to resolve DNS entries. Usually, it's just a couple of seconds, but when it "hangs," it's usually about 30 seconds, and sometimes a minute or more.

I can tell it's DNS resolution because:
- I can still access (ping, telnet, HTTP, ...) sites by IP address.
- If I have multiple DNS requests pending (ping, web site, ...), they all wake up at the same time.

This PC is on a home LAN behind a Linksys BEFSR41 switch/router. There are two other PCs (one Win 98, one Win XP Home) on the LAN. Neither of those show any signs of this problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Firstly what's the response like from the default gateway server and the DNS servers?

Run IPCONFIG /ALL (space between ipconfig and the /ALL) in a dos prompt to get this info, and ping the IP addresses for the gateway and DNS servers to give you an idea of the response times.

If the response is poor, run a tracert to the destination IP of the web pages you are requesting and see where the connection fails - maybe this might help you?

I occasionally get the same fault on 56K dialup to my ISP, and no amount of disconnecting and reconnecting helps, when it happens I have to reboot the pc from scratch to restart the TCP/IP stack.
