Comment:

Cant get the sound to work on Skype although I see my sound coard on Skype settings menu.

The sound card works but skype reports "problem with the sound card".

I know that Skype does not support WinME so I'm looking for a "fix"

Thank you

There are a lot of reasons for poor quality, you can all check below, but ultimately you all probably have completely different setups.

1) check TCP/IP connections are set to 50, or install new version 1.2. if you are not running it.

2) Missing entry advice
One entry missing?
Please check your config.xml file for these 2(two) AGC entries.
If not, please add
You need to select "show hidden files" in folder options
Use any editor like Word Pad or Word, as config.xml is a real text file. For Windows XP, you can just double click, amend and save. But you MUST EXIT SKYPE FIRST>
To be found in
C:
Documents and settings
Your profile name
Application data
Skype
Skype User name
config.xml
Find these 2 (two) entries in
One in "General" AND one in "Call"
It shall look like this

<Call>
<AGC>1</AGC>
and

<General>
<AEC>1</AEC>
<AGC>1</AGC>

Don’t forget to shutdown Skype before doing this.
Skype will not allow any changes in this file while running!

If still no Joy, try below
==============================================================================

3) Disable (A)utomatic (G)ain ©ontrol AGC
in

Now change this "1" in the middle to "0", this will disable Skype AGC
It shall look like this

<Call>
<AGC>0</AGC>
and

<General>
<AEC>1</AEC>
<AGC>0</AGC>

Don’t forget to shutdown Skype before doing this.
You must set the signal volume now manually for best quality (use MS Sound Recorder or echo123 again)

Thank you for your input however I solved this problem about one month ago by uninstalling the latest Skype version and installing an older version.

Since then Skype is working just fine.
