Okay im running a compaq presario 5000 thats model #5WV254 windows me. when i go to control panel and display, then settings tab, i try to make my screen resolution 800by 600. but it wont let me move the thing on the line, so its stuck at 640by480. please help

You might need to update your video card drivers.
When you go to:
Right click My Computer>Properties>Device Manager>click on the "+" next to Display Adapter.
What do you see?
It should list your video card, maybe it has an "!" mark in yellow.
Anyway it might give you some info on the card, if it does not there are other ways to find it.

you also might need to go into bios/setup
and set more ram available for the onboard
video.I think you can have it use up to 8 mbs
of ram. (if your compaq has integrated video)

I've also seen this happen,when your pc needs a monitor driver.
