i've turned down the volume in properties and i still get the noise; what can i do? compaq 900mhz amd anthlon 128 mb 30.dgb h.d. cd-rom dr. cd-rw d. 8mb.nv

What do you mean by the sound made while modem boot? Do you mean the sound it make when you are dialing into your ISP? If that is the sound you are talking about, then right click on the IE icon on desktop and click on properties. Then select the Connection tab, select the dial-up setting and click "settings". Then in Dial-up Settings click Properties, in connect using click configure and move the slider to the far left to turn off the modem speaker volum.

There is a small "transducer" (speaker) on the modem card and I guess that you could also put a piece of tape over the top of it to reduce the sound if Response Number 1 does not silence it enough. The transducer is a small round tube (3/8" X 1/2" or so, usually black).
The instructions in Response Number 1 should electronically kill the sound completely though.

If you're talking about the sound of the modem dialing up ur ISP then the modems communicating, try this: Go to CONTROL PANEL, right click on MODEMS, click OPEN, right click on the modem in use, click PROPERTIES, click CONNECTION, click ADVANCED. In the Extra Settings box add these settings:
L0 for lowest speaker volume (that's a zero)
L1 for low
L2 for medium
L3 for highest
U can also add M1 to make the speaker go off after carrier is detected. I also add W2 so that the number down in the system tray will show modem to modem speed. Just pick the settings u want and put them together in a "string", like this: L0M1W2
Go to google and do a search for "modem initialization string" for more info.
