for a very funny story!Geoff i have no idea what that error means!
Has it been happening since you purchased it?
If its new take it back.
If it started happening recently.......
When did this problem begin?
Do you remember installing any updates or drivers or hardware or software before this problem began? What about a roomate or loved one who decided you needed that super cool FREE comet cursor? Or that little virtual chick who runs back and forth on your desktop? Freeware is unstable untested and the cause of a large number of system problems IMO. do we really need another screeen saver? If you can remember what it was that changed when the problem began this would make it easier to troubleshoot the error. You can search microsoft or the other manufacturers support site for information concerning incompatibility. Back Up data. Format the hard drive and reinstall windows.
shutdown and restart a few times even try the hibernate feature to see if you can get windows to crash on its own. If not do the same With each additional aplication you install. I keep a log of each change to my computer even if its relocating text files to another drive or running scandisk and defrag so i know exactly what caused any problems that shows up. MS Visio crashed my machine on me every time i tried to exit the program. But i could deal with it because it always saved my changes with no problems. a year later during a call with MS i found out that visio likes to see a printer installed upon installation. Weird? Your telling me! I told the microsoft tech my problem he said "when you installed visio did you install your printer first?" i told him no i always install my software then hardware. He said "thats your problem right there! visio likes to see a printer." he was right! And it didnt like the printer i had so we set up a phantom printer to fool visio. Ive been typing way to much here i better go before the white coats show up:)

Don't go reformating the hard drive just yet. Try a system restore first, if this dosn't fix the problem then you may want to reinstall winMe over it self.
Good luck and thebest2uDon.

I experieced several forms of shutdown problems - freezes, windows protection errors, and 0E errors. Micron Tech Support claimed that they were nearly always driver problems. I got the M/B replaced under warranty (a fan went out) and the errors were reduced to protection errors - nearly 100% of the shutdowns. New video and sound card drivers and a BIOS flash may have fixed the problem. I have had none of the problems since the flashing of the BIOS; however, that was too recent an event for me to feel secure in calling it a fix.

hi,
i also experienced such problems and doing few tweaks i got rid of it in most cases,
Try Removing Sound files on events like :-
Shutdown windows,
Close Program,
Programe Error,
You may also Try Using "MSCONFIG"
Under which you can Uncheck some programmes which are memory eaters and you dont need them to start automatically, Some programmes which are heavy on system resources make system slow and they cause problem in closing themselves and gives you a Blue Screen Gift.

refresh your video and sound drivers also, or update them if possible. try disconnecting any 3rd party peripherals (printer, scanner, etc.).

well heres what I did -I had the same vxd 0028 error at least 50 times !!!!!!!!!
heres what i did..it may help you depending on onfirst select start/ run and type in "msconfig" ......on the 'static vxd ' tab click it open
deselect (uncheck) any box that has "norton" OR "symevent.386 " in it..(its a norton file that causes the video display adapter to get corrupted on shutdown) its a known problem for certain display adapters....see MS Knowledge base..in addition:open control panel/ device mgr/ system/pci bus/ change the steering setting to use"bios"....
i did this 3 weeks ago and it has definitely solved my problem..
.before it was fine while "on" but if i shutdown.. here came the error every time almost...mouse would freeze or program hang and then the dreaded power off to the 0028 error guaranteed!!!!!!!!!!!!!
try system restore to get it to boot up...the above wont work in safe mode..no problems for last 3 weeks and ive shutdown 60 times to test it
you might have to reinstall ME over itself like i did to get it booted! but the good news is it remembers all drivers etc and you dont have to do any reloading...it even remembers restore points...!
also i would goto my display adapter homepage to install any updated driver
fyi im running AMD Athlon 800 , soyo k7 motherboard ,ATI chipset display and
uninstalled norton 2001....its really bad at hanging up programs alsogood luck
