shutdown and re-boot issues

I had Win 98 SE on my system at home. It was unable to reboot, but was able to shutdown. So everytime that I had to reboot I would just shutdown. So Win ME came alone. I figured that it might solve the reboot issue. So I upgraded. Now my system won't even shutdown without having to run scan disk. Reboot is the same way. Is there a solution other than reinstall?

Probably not. If you do ctrl-alt-delete and manually close all running applications, will it shut down? If so its just a matter of elimination. Otherwise, I think it is reinstall time and keep adding apps until the problem starts again.

I get the same problem. First it wouldn't restart. Until I installed a new sound driver. Now it won't shut down. I think its a driver thats not compatible with Me. And I'm leaning towards my one of my network cards.

When shuting down the PC running Me with an antivirus product active I get a Windows Protection error. ScanDisk is then executed after a reset. If I disctivate the antivirus then all is OK. I made a new Me install on a fresh disk, added only the antivirus and shutdown the PC. All was OK. I then installed Netscape 4.7. Then I started having the Windows protection error problem when shuting down. Is there a version of Netscape that runs on Me with an antivirus active?
