I posted on the XP board woundering if I should upgrade from 98se to XP. Since i'm a gamer it would be best if I Stay away from a NT kernel.
How about Windoes ME? How is that for gaming and how is that OS compared to 98se
?>

...NO...
WinME vs Win98se
..Win98se..
I should say though that this is just an opinion..., I should also say that I went from 98se to ME (like ME, not the crashes)... and then from ME to XP.I LOVE XP. I'm a big gamer and love how stable it runs. I'm able to run games I couldn't in ME. But be warned, XP NEEDS drivers... and XP drivers at that. Make sure your system hardware all have XP drivers, or else you'll be in for a bad ride.

Since Me is the only O/S I've ever used I would not be able to tell you which is best . I know alot of people hate Me and say it is to worst O/S there is. I've found that if you take the time to learn how to configure it correctly , eliminating to many programs from loading at startup etc. Plus I have Norton Utilities, I recomend Norton highly on WinME ! The system restore feature has saved my butt a couple of times . System Restore is also available on XP. I have a friend whom has XP and his biggest complaint is that alot of his applications wont work on XP, even with that said Iam sure most people would tell you to go for XP, why not use the latest O/S out there. Maybe go to the XP board and see what kind of problems people are posting in that forum ?

In general, I've found that running programs on XP is far easier, mainly with the easier to use compatiblity option.
I've also noticed that any program I try to run... runs. But, the prgrams that use hardware like printing programs or video capture seem to be very hard to run if the wrong drivers are being used.
Trust me... it's all about the drivers in XP.

Well My Video and Sound Card should have XP Drivers(they are Nvidia and Creative)
I'm not too sure about everything else though(well my Ethernet Card and USBPIC card were set by the Plug and Pray scan of Win98. I just used the drivers that came with 98 for thoes things).

I have every intention to buy a full install of XP Pro, as soon as I can justify it, and be done with the ME nightmare.

Windows Me is great, the restore feature is the greatest, I got sick of the System File Checker in W98se, had freezes all the time, but I think WinMe is for the more causious, person wanting to do a lot of tweeks & I am not a gamer, but from what I have heard on here I do not think WinMe is for gamers, I personally have not had any problems with WinMe or IE 6, but I don't change alot of things that I see on here by the more pro person. I have heard that for gamers XP is the way to go, but not recommending it by my experience. I al think that AOL & Nortons cause a lot of trouble in Windows Me, which I do not use either. Sue

I have a desktop with ME, and a laptop with XP. Everything works with ME, and it gets where I want it to go very quickly. ME is as good as you make it. XP, on the other hand, is a great disappointment in the way it does not play with several of my favorite games and some of the hardware. I plan to dump the XP very soon and have an OS on both machines that suit MY needs.

You know your bored when you respond to these "whos better" posts :).
There is no better. You can show me articles and share opinions till the cows come home. It all depends on what you use the machine for and what your machines credentials are. The only other thing that should be considered is budget.
1.What OS do you have already?
2.Does it do what you need it to do?
If the answer to number 2 is Yes then the answer to number 1 is the OS you should be running.
If the answer to number 2 is No......3.Will your system handle (driver-software support) a new OS?
If the answer to number 3 is Yes then you should upgrade the OS.
If the answer to number 3 is No......4.What hardware-software needs to be upgraded so that you can use the New OS?
Will the cost of these upgrades and the price of the new OS exceed the price of a new computer?
If the answer to number 4 is that the upgrades will cost more or very close to a new machine you should just buy the new computer. If you only have to spend a few bucks to get the new OS running on your existing machine you should keep it. Save the extra money for your next PC. lets face it We will be buying and using computers for the rest of our lives just like our parents with TV's.XP Me 98? Research the software you want to run. Which OS will work with everything? This is the one you should pick.
Now ive pretty much forgotten my point so i will end this now. By the way Windows ME runs great on my computer. Much more stable than windows 98 and while XP was as stable if not more it was very slow. I will gladly deal with the monthly ME BSOD for twice the speed of XP.

I have ME on my desktop at home my wife has 98 on her desktop. My experience with ME has not been very good. Constant lockups and crashes. Sure, I could probably constantly tweak it but I don't want an O/S that I have to tiptoe around.
My wifes 98 is incredibly stable on a pentium 233. The hard drive has never been reformatted since first install and It purrs along.
I have the Windows 2000 CD and will dump ME and install 2000 in about 2 weeks.

NO NO NO!!!!
Whatever you do, do NOT install WinME. I am desperately trying to figure out how to put back Win98SE but the CD won't let me revert back so I'm screwed! Do NOT make the same mistake I have.
WinME is the biggest POS I've ever used. Half the applications on my PC mysteriously freeze requiring a cold boot. WinXP while more stable has plenty of its own problems. The truth is, Win98SE is the only real stable, version of Windows available right now.

Very good points, Mac...prima.
I agree to all your points and esp. the latest statement: "...XP is as stable if not more it was very slow". Yep..you right, XP is a resource hog OS. If you just kinda a power user, which means the GUI (candies and whistles) is not important for you, the most important is performance, than XP is not for you. It runs apps (such as Photoshop, etc) really slow, even on Athlon 1500+, 512 MB RAM compared to system under Win2000 with P3-450, 256 MB RAM. You must not believe it...yeah...but it is on my system. No matter how i tweak it, XP is slow.
Perhaps, it occurs only on my system, on other system runs ok...
Just my opinion....

A big problem with XP is how some of the most important pieces of software don't work and have to be replaced, such as Norton Utilities, Ontrack Fix-it Utilities, and Easy CD Creator. The best thing you could do is run the XP Upgrade Advisor so you know what kinds of software and hardware problems your system will have. It's a very big download (50mb)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
but it really gives you a lot of good information when it scans your system.

For Gamers, I recomen ME better than XP, cause too many games are configured to run only on Win9x(WinME,98,95)...I admit that ME and XP can be unstabel to certain taip of Mother Board and Souncard, buts thats usually hapens for old hardware comp...About XP, I`ve heard they have clashes with MoBo using VIA Chipsets...
Another reason that I`m not using XP alltho im aware what potential(advantage) XP hav is that you could not play PSX on XP because Bleem1.5b,Connectix VGS and ePSXe v1.20(these 3 are the best for playing PSX on comp)are program base only to run on Win9x...I`m waiting for these PSX emulators to be able to play on XP...If you want performance, u can use XP. WinMe and XP is configured for high performence and latest hardware computer...If u are using cpu below PIII 450MHz and motherboard below apollo pro family or pc partner, I recomend the Win98SE...As far as I know, WinME has no problem on Intel Pentium cpu and Intel Chipsets Motherboard such as Asus,MSI and Intel Destop MoBo...For Via chipsets, mobo such as pc partner, apollo pro family,MSI and Asus are stable...Others I dono cause these are mobo that I usually buy for my friends and that I hav installed ME on them and theres no problem what so ever...

Well, after reading some of the notsoglorifying comments about XP, I think I will rethink an upgrade. Particularly because it being slow indicates much may be running in the background. Seeing how Microshaft has shown their propensity to monitor and track all activity on PCs running Windows, as exibited in ME (monitor everything). And making it more and more difficult for users to defeat their systems, I am very concerned that they are moving to systems which operate totally out of sight of the user. at least with ME, I know which files they are using, and how to eliminate them.
