Hi everyone!
Got a quick question. Is windows ME a good way to go? I have a machine with windows 98se
and I a pretty happy with it. But I would like to stay in pace with the times and I am now thinking of changing over to ME upgrade. I just wanted to get everyones reactions on windows ME and what they think of it. Also I am a little lost. I have seen windows ME "the promotion upgrade" which sells for say, $50 at a walmart new, and then you have the other windows ME upgrade that sells for 89 or $90 bucks. Is there any difference between the promotion upgrade and the regular upgrade ME? Which should you all think I should buy... Thanks in advance for eveyones thoughts and opinions...

Rebecca

Yea ! Upgrades is NOT BAD...When you upgrades from WIN98SE make sure you do a WINME BOOTABLE disk and Leave Win98SE saved (may take about 300MB)....so later on if you want to Uninstalled WINME you can still have WIN98SE.

WINME $50 (this Version is ONLY for WIN98/SE upgrades)
WINME $90 (this version is for WIN95/98/SE)
WINME about $200 (this is the FULL VERSION)
WINME OEM came with the New Home PC.

I had Windows 95 on my Machine, then upgraded to Windows 98Se an upgrade not full edition, then got the Windows Me 49.00 upgrade, which is the one you can use, my suggestion is upgrade all drivers and by reading all these things on this site for problems, I think if you want to change things tweak and do all that stuff I don't think me is for you, I love me because of the System Restore, if I download anything like free software programs and don't like them sometimes they cause problems and you can't uninstall them without errors, so you can just use System Restore to before you did it, works great, I have a Pavilion 7270 an older HP, but I have upgraded it from 2.5 Gig fat 16 to 20 Gigs fat 32, and if I would have had this before I probably would have like 98Se better, but I kept having freezes and that darn System file checker I kept having corrupt files, it drove me nuts, I am also not a gamer, I guess if you like games w98se is better I would not know just what I've read here, I love Windows Me, and have had no problems, if you have memory I only have 80 MB, but with the fat 32 its a hole lot. I think you will love it. Sue

Windows XP (also known as Windows.net (Windows dot net) or WinWhistler is planned for a September 2001 release.

It is the next operating system available and yes, it does look good in my opinion.

I would definitely wait for it.

www.winsupersite.com - check this out fot the latest news regarding XP.

As for WinME, it works fine on my machine. However, make sure your upto date, have a lot of power and memory and a clean install is the best bet.

Upgrade = You need a previous version of Windows (CD that is).

Full = No previous version needed.

Both are the same, but the upgrade simply checks (asks for the Win98/95 cd to verify you have had a copy of Windows before).

Rebecca, if you are happy with your windows 98 dont upgrade to ME... there is a saying -dont try to fix whats not broken - windows ME is just a dressed up version of windows 98... has significant hardware and software compatibility problems.... an article that i red does not reccomend to upgrade to ME a computer older than 6 months.... spend rather $50 for something more usefull... windows ME does have modem and WMP7 problem on my new computer where it was factory installed by proffesionals....

One word NO! I upgraded to ME system wouldn't shutdown properly, had all kinds of error and this was a clean install. If 98SE is working fine then stick with it. If you want to do an upgrade how about Win2000 Professional. I would be running this but my acer wireless network devices are not compatiable.

In my experience, don't do it. All I have had is problems with WinME. Games Crash, stupid Internet explorer errors and my CD-R drive works like crap now. I'm going back to 98SE on my machine, since it was more stable.

I wouldn't suggest it, I am a Tech for a computer company, will not say which one, but I notice TONS of problems with the OS as is. It could use some major tweaking, and debugging...

NO! Don't do it. I just got a new computer with ME preinstalled. I have not been able to shut the computer down properly from day 1. I get blue screen protection errors or the computer reboots everytime I try and shutdown. I've tried diffrent Video drivers diffrent sound drivers and I can't fix the problem. I'm now in the process of removing ME and installing Win2000 and Win98se in a duel boot configuration. ME is a big pain in the arse.

Personally I think win98se has a few nicer functions than ME, mainly that ME lacks being able to do anything more than the normal user stuff. I think the only real nice addition in ME is the option to be able to choose which application to open a file with via a right click. You can open a HTML file in Frontpage, then in Notepad, and it will remember and give you the option to open in either next time.

I would do the upgrade ME works perfectly on my computers.....If you plan on getting XP....I would wait....its suppose to come out by the end of the summer. ME may work better than you think.....just because some people are having problems...doesnt mean you will.

If you like to tinker and tweak I sa YES, if only because of the system restore. I have tinkered and messed up things since a child and do the same 60 yrs later. The restore is it for me.

I would not advise ME. It is a memory hungry OS and it consumes about 120MB of RAM during my boot up, as with Windows 98 Second Edition I have about 70% of total RAM left after bootup.
