Hi. I am running windows millenium on a 300mhz AMD K6-2 with 96megs of RAM. Although Win Me has all of its buggy problems, my computer seems to run better after it has been on for a few hours and I have ran programs and whatever. Is it better to leave my computer on all the time, and what is the safe CPU tempurature I should have. On average it is about 98 degrees.

I would say keep your cpu as cool as possible try installing some more fans or getting an ALPHA heat sink for it.

I've seen this debated alot. I've been a tech for many years and have not found one to be better than the other. I'm sure you will get alot of comments both ways now. I would suggest if you feel that your PC runs better after it has been on for awhile, try leaving it on for awhile. Then try turning it on and off for awhile and see which one seem better. I've not seen many heat problems from leaving the PC on. The only time I've seen problems is when someone is overclocking the processor and I dought if your doing that. Personaly, I like to turn my PC on in the morning and off when I go to bed. I feel it might save a little of the life of the power supply. I'm probably full of it, but that's how I've always done it.

I have the exact same processor. Mine has a heatsink and ball-bearing fan mounted on it. I would definitely recommend that setup for continuous use.

My system has been on nearly continuously for 15 months, ever since I got a cable modem. Just this weekend, the fan in my power supply failed. They typically have a MTBF (mean time between failure) of just 20,000 hours. (That's 2.3 years so mine failed early)

If you leave it on all the time you have to make sure it's on a good surge strip, you check the vents regularily, blow dust out of the system on occassion, and make sure your fans keep blowing.

I am one of those who believe that if you dont need your computer turn it off. If you get up in the morning and check your email etc. And dont plan on doing anything till later in the afternoon or evening, I would turn it off. Fans, power supplies etc. will last longer in my opinion.

Certainly either way is ok, I would recommend though that if you use your computer a few times throughout the day just let it run all the time, hardrives and other components work better without the stress of heating up and cooling down and can increase the lifespan. Its like a city taxi that runs all the time, they get hundreds of thousands of miles just because they run them all the time
