this is me once again, just to thank the guys who helped me fix my problem published above, for andy and here(?), maybe your just the same guy, just want to tell you, you're the MAN, okay, my sincere appreciation of your skills, hoping you'll be nice and still helping everyone, good luck!

Hi guys, I have the same problem and when I try to extract the file it tells me that it can not open the file any suggestions???
The file win_8.cab does not exist in my directory and I am still having the same error? please help!!!Thanks

The cab files on my system are in C:\windows\options\install, not in cabs.
Unfortunately, I got an out of memory error when I tried to extract it (after it blew the original away). Then you can't boot into Windows at all. I had to get the file from a friend - it is 1.3 MB and just barely fits on a diskette. Copied it into C:\windows\system. System boots fine, but it didn't fix the Explorer problem for me.

I too have experienced the shell32.dll error that is preventing me from accessing my computer beyond a partial load.
I have typed in the above listed repair sent by Andy and get a "bad name of file name" message. Am I typing it wrong?Mark

I have Windows 98 and when I use internet explorer and try to opened three or more website I receive the following error message: There is not enough memory to start C:\Windows\System\SHELL32.DLL Quit some programs and they try again and alos some times received this messsge also "iexplorer has caused an error in shell32.dll." Iexplorer will now close.

Please help me. What should I do ?

I must be stupid or something. Because I don't know what a start up disk is. And I can't get my pc to start in safe mode... I can't even get into control panel it just freezes up. Plz help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had this nightmare just two days back and after multiple emails back and forth to the compaq guys and well as no sleep they finally sent me a solution that actually worked (for me at least!). I did the quick restore option and did not loose any of my files or progs. Let me learn from this and do timely backups from now on ;). I am pasting it here for you. Hope it helps.
The reason for the system not booting is because of the operating system
being corrupted. To get the system running again I suggest you reinstall
the operating system. Please follow the solution given below to do so:I. Create a Windows ME boot disk:
1. Click Start->Settings -> Control Panel.
2. Click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Click on the Startup Disk tab and insert the floppy in the floppy
drive then click
4. Create Disk. This will create a boot disk. Restart your system with this disk in the
floppy drive.NOTE: Please perform the above given procedure on another system which
is running on Windows ME. A bootable diskette is also called a bootable
floppy, boot disk, and startup disk.II. Alternative Method to create a Boot Disk:
To create a boot disk from Internet, visit the following site:
http://dos.li5.org/IMGS/WINME.EXE
The following file will be downloaded on to your desktop. Once the file
is downloaded on tom your desktop double-click on it and follow the
on-screen instruction.III. Changing boot sequence:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Press F10 key when the red Compaq logo appears during Startup.
3. Select English for language.
4. Click the Storage option in the menu bar.
5. Click the Boot Order option.
6. The Boot Order information would be displayed, verify that floppy
drive is set as first boot device, CD-ROM as second and Hard Drive as
Third booting device.
7. Save and exit the BIOS settings.
8. Insert the bootable floppy and restart the systemIV. Reinstalling operating system:
Please note that there would be no loss of any user data by reinstalling
the Operating System.NOTE: Compaq recommends Full Restore for reinstalling operating system
which will result in loss of all user data. However, other users have
been able to solve their problems by reinstalling the operating system
by an alternative method.Follow these steps to do so:
1. Press F8 during Startup to access the Startup menu. Ignore any error
messages that occur.
2. Choose "Command prompt only" from the Startup menu and press Enter.
3. Type the following line when command prompt (A:\>)appears:
C:\Windows\options\cabs\setup.exe.NOTE: Performing this will not result in any loss of users data.
However, any issues by performing the above process will not be
supported by Compaq. Compaq can recommend only Full restore for
reinstallation of OS.In case the operating system does not get loaded then the only option to
reload the operating system is to perform a Full Restore operation.
Please follow the procedure given below to do so:V. Partition of hard disk and perform a Full Restore operation:
Note: Make sure to disconnect all third-party devices from your system
before doing a Quick Restore. Only leave mouse, keyboard and monitor
connected.Quick Restoring your system will delete all files. (i.e. Email, Word and
Works Documents, Downloaded files from the Internet, etc) Please back up
all files you wish to keep. If you are unable to get into the operating
system to back up your files you may wish to consult local data recovery

You totally rock!! Wonderful, great, terrific. It worked, the extract cab_8 method it mean. I did have to replace the CAB location with install on my computer but I am now up and running.
Thanks,
John Davis

Andy,Here,(Response 5 and 6):
Trying to extract the SHDOCVW.DLL file from the cabs did not work for me. It returned with a message that file could not be found. I ended up copying SHDOCVW.DLL from another computer. The problem has been resolved, thanx to you guys pointing me in the right direction!!!!!
