Comment:

I recently uninstalled Ie6 from my computer running Windows ME. Now EVERYTIME I try to start the computer, even in Safe mode, I get a message saying "Explorer has caused an error in SHELL32.DLL. Explorer will close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer."
I no longer have a copy of the operating system on disk to reinstall, but I still have my Windows 98 cd. Will the computer work if I install Win98 over ME? And will I still be able to save all my files?

Also, if anyone knows another way around this could you please let me know.

hello
from safe mode do system restore.to point befor this happened.
allso look and see if you have these files
c:windows\options\cabs\setup.exe
if you have those you have a full install of m.e on your hard drive and you can use it to reinstall windows on top of its self for repairing.
if you burn the to to cd and find your seril for m.e ether on tag on out side of case or in the registry you can than have full install disk of m.e

I have just fixed a similar problem:

"Explorer has caused an Invalid Page Fault in Browseui.dll Explorer will close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer."

Thing was no program or even the Start Menu would come up other than Windows Task Manager with CTRL-ALT-DELETE then all I could do was close down. When I entered Safe Mode the same happened!

In the end I used a bootdisk to startup and edit the SYSMEM.INI file to change the shell from EXPLORER.exe to PROGMAN.exe to enable me to get past the fault. Once in Safe Mode I was then able to start Restore to a older date.

Thank you both for the help. So I am understanding you correctly that I should not need a disk copy of Windows ME in order to solve this problem. No icons, start menus, or anything beside the wallpaper will boot up in regular mode or safe mode. The bootdisk you're referring to is a floppy disk right?

Anthony,

To answer your question;
"The bootdisk you're referring to is a floppy disk right?"

That would be correct. The one you should of made, when you installed the OS. Or you made later. If you didn't make one ;-), you can download one from here. Be sure to follow the instructions at the site, as to how to make the disk.

This(ftp) or this(http) is what Mick C is referring to.

Good Luck
