Comment:

My roomate recently uninstalled Ie6 from my computer running Windows ME. Now EVERYTIME I try to start the computer I get a message saying "Explorer has caused an error in SHELL32.DLL. Explorer will close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer."

I no longer have a copy of the operating system on disk to reinstall, but I still have my Windows 98 cd. Will the computer work if I install Win98 over ME? And will I still be able to save all my files?

Also, if anyone knows another way around this could you please let me know.

Everything that I find seems to just say to reinstall Me from the disk, which I have managed to lose. That's why I was wondering if I could put win98 back on and have everything working again.

If you have any other suggestions let me know.

Thanks.

I would reinstall ie6 and tell roommate to get his own computer. only way to install 98 is to reformat & lose everything.

I would just reintall ie6,but everytime I start the computer I get the same error message and windows explorer will not run. So the computer at this point is completely useless.

Do you know if win me is still available to buy in stores?

I did that already and it did not hep things at all. I did however manage to fix it. After I booted from the start up disk, I chose no cd rom support. From there cd to c:\windows\options\cabs.

And then,

extract /a win_8.cab shdocvw.dll /l c:\windows\system

I then restarted and got things going. Everything is working fine execpt ie6 is still acting a little funny. But I'm still working on that.

Thanks though!

I encountered the same exact problem as you and was wondering if you could be a little clearer in your explanation of how you were able to solve the problem. Did you insert your Windows 98 start up disk or were you able to get a hold of an ME version? I need to try and get this fixed ASAP. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide me.
