I used the upgrade to winme over 98se. A utility I used often in wim98se seems to be missing. SFC or system file checker was a good utility. Does anyone know how to find or use it in winme? They still let me have msconfig, so I am hopeful they put it where I can't find it, lol. Any help would be great.

Microsoft did away with in Me and replaced it with an automatic system file protection feature to prevent system files from being replaced. I use a program to back up system files that you might like. It's called System Safe Gold, available for free that you can download from tucows.com. It works really well.

MS replaced it in WinME with automatic system file protection.

if you upgraded you can find it in your win 98 cab files > WIN98_46.CAB.

installing win me removes it but it still can be used.
If you think you need to
windows me is a little better at not letting older versions overwrite files.

Wow ! Thanks everyone. The symantec site is a great link, I didn't even know they had stuff like that in there, lol. I like sfc because it lets me check to see if anything changed that should not be changed...the new virus gone.scr is making me cover my bases.
Thanks again.

Hi ! Topaz !
Thanks Topaz for coming back to let the guys know how things were turning out with your problem. I DON'T know why most of the people asking a question never come back to let us know how things went. If thigs didn't work out form the reply or replys that you receive, then come back to this Forum and let the people whom replyed to your question know, and ask us for other ideas.I see people come here for help even when the Tech people who made their own computer didn't know or couldn't help!,but the guys here did or at least cared more.------Donald
