Hello,

I am currently running Microsoft Windows 98, and I am wanting to upgrade to Windows ME. My system properties as follows:

32 MB RAM
8 MB Video RAM
Pentium II MMX 266Mhz
4GB Hard Drive, 1.67GB Free Space
U.S. Robotics 56k Fax modem

I am wondering if my computer will handle the install of Windows ME, and if so, can I install Windows ME without the Windows 98 CD (I lost it about 3 months ago)?

If I must have the CD, is there a hack/crack/spoof that is available so it thinks it is in? (I have the cd contents stored on my hard drive.)

When I do upgrade to Windows ME, will I lose my settings/programs/information on my hard drive? if I do, is there anyway that I can copy the new OS on without having to re-install all the files on my computer?

Your help would be appriciated. Thank you.

You should have no problems upgrading to Windows ME When the upgrade says it cannot find a previous version of Windows, click the browse button on screen, and browse to your Win98 folder. Setup will find what it needs. You will not lose any files. One problem you do have is not enough RAM. Add at least 256MB RAM. RAM is cheap now, 256MB is selling for under $30.

At this point....If your happy with the way windows98 is running i wouldnt spend the extra cash. The upgrade along with the cost of additional ram possibly a bigger HD for more storage is nearing the range for a new PC. If it were me i would hold off/start saving/wait till XP drivers start popping up and the bugs are worked out and go for a new machine in about a year. Your modem is one of the best and definately a keeper. The 4GB hd you can slave to the new machine for storage or another OS. "Build your own!" When/if you choose a motherboard and processor go with asus and amd for best price.

Hi K

If you are running win98 second edition, I would not upgrade. The differences for a home user are just not that major. I also believe you will have to upgrade your ram to at least 128mb. Me does a lot of work in the background and is very hard on resources

Don't bother getting more memory on your system then 256mb. Win ME won't use more than that.
Also, why upgrade? If it works, definetly do not fix it unless you want to spend some time troubleshooting problems.
