Comment:

The serial port on the PC is not working. I bought an add on card with 2 serial ports. This were assigned com5 and com6. I need to change these to com1,2,3,4. The program I'm using allows only com 1-4 for input. Any way to change the port numbers.
Thanks

Found it...Win 95,98 and Me assign com 5 to any new port. Remeber to backup your registry
before any changes..

1. Confirm there does not exist a COM3 in the Start->Settings->Control Panel->System->Device Manager->Ports (COM & LPT) section.
2. Run REGEDIT.
3. Search for COM5 - When found, the key would look something like the following:
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\MF\CHILD0000\PCI&VEN_11B0&DEV_0001&BUS_00&DEV_11&FUNC_00

4. You will need to change all references for COM5 to COM3. Generally these will be the following keys:
DeviceDesc, FRIENDLYNAME and PORTNAME.
Perform this modification to all entries in the
My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\MF\CHILD0000
directory entries that have references to COM5.

5. After the modifications, exit REGEDIT. this will save the new registry entry.

6. Now upon reboot, you should see the port defined as COM3, instead of COM5.
