Hello,
Here is my problem. When I send e-mail attachments through my bellsouth account or by hotmail I get disconnected from the net. Sometimes it will not disconnect me, it just want let me go to any web sites until I manually disconnect and reconnect. I have even tried sending files through ICQ, still it will not finish sending file and will still mess up my connection. At first I thought it was zip files, but I tried sending files unzipped. I have tried different file sizes with no luck. I had deleted Windows ME and reinstalled it, still same problem. So, could it be my modem? I still play games on line and download stuff with no problem.
System Specs:
Tyan S2380 K7 MB, Classic 850mhz Athlon, 256 PC133 Sdram, Creative SB512 pci sound card and my modem is a 3com u.s. robotics 56k voice win.

any help would be appreiated

dereke

check if your modem is WDM type, if it is and the computer is still under waranty ask for replacement... if it is not under waranty buy a hardware modem (you can budget $70 for internal or $100 for external)... windows ME requires VERY good hardware... so be prepared to shell out some money ;-)

External... hardware modem... Phoebe with a 5 year warranty... $36(NOT $100).

Price curtosey of www.pricewatch.com

Give me a break Miro... I bought this modem 3 or 4 years ago and I didn't pay that much then.

... BTW... to the original poster...I don't think the problem is with your connection. Since you browse and send non-attachments well.. I'm thinking it is either software interfering(like an antivirus program scanning your outgoing mail... or a firewall disconnecting you when you attempt to send on a different port that hasn't been configured correctly).

Go to start>>run>>msconfig.
Choose Selective startup.
Take the checkmark out of Load Startup Group Items.
Click apply>>ok>>and reboot when prompted.

Now... get on the net and try to send an attachment. Did it go?

newgrl, $100 thats the price i did see in CirquitCity that includes 6% tax in my state last weekend on a modem that had on the box windows ME written....
i looked at the pricewatch, it is $36 plus $9.99 sh (starting) plus i dont know if they would charge the sales tax.
i looked up the modem information on dealers webside, it is listing windows 98 operating system.
http://www.acompinc.com/cgi-bin/pmoreinfo.pl?ITCODE=MODPUSB
If i am not sure that the modem will work i would not order it on line...(i have already enough paperweights that i received that way.... hehehe)

Miro... I don't want to argue with you... if you want to buy all of your computer stuff from CircutCity or CompUSA or any of the other overpriced stores... go right ahead... makes no difference to me.

... but may I suggest you find a decent Mom-and-Pop store in your area as they generally(shop around your area a bit) don't attempt to sell you hardware at such inflated prices and they may have someone on staff that can actually help you with your questions. The kids working for the chains are working for $6 an hour and could care less about you.

As far as the modem only being listed for Windows 98...
First: The modem that you pointed to is NOT a hardware modem. It is USB and that generally means it is a software modem. There are *some* hardware USB modems, but they tend to be pretty expensive.

Second: If you do buy a hardware modem that connects to a serial port on your computer... you can use *almost* any decent driver.

On both Window 98 and Windows 2000 on our system, the modem is using one of the Standard Modem drivers from the Windows cd. It is actually listed as a Standard Modem in the control panel even though it is a Diamond SupraExpress bought a few years ago. Winmodems or software modems require such specific software that the programmer who builds the driver must be very specific. Making software do hardware's job is sometimes like putting a round stick into a square hole. It will go... but to get it there...

... and as long as I've got you here... WDM=Windows Driver Model. You can have a software modem and still not see this listed if the company that made the driver is not using the Windows Driver Model. Microsoft has been attempting to impliment a standard for drivers so to improve the stability of the OS. When creating WDM drivers, the programmers must make the drivers go through the OS in order to make calls to other hardware such as the CPU and RAM. This can be tough... especially with *so many* software/hardware combinations out there. This is not a completely new standard... but Windows ME is the first OS that has *made* these hardware companies do this. It was implimented(according to MS) to increase the stability of the OS. This is why so many scanner/cameras, winmodems, etc... didn't work with ME before new drivers were built.

I am done now... I am not going to argue with you. Have a good day Miro.:)

newgrl, i never intended to make my posts sounding arguably towards you... i consider you as the most knowlegeable person by far on this board.... my posts express frustration with microsoft and computer manufacturers, that they did allow to put windows ME on computers with WDM modems... or put WDM modems on computers with windows ME... my understanding of it is like mounting 15 inch tires on 14 inch rims... ;-)
my computer parts shopping practices are driven by my knowlege or lack of it.... if i am not sure if something works i have a choice either to research it (and as not a computer proffesional it takes me much more time then you) or to buy it at a store that has good return policy ;-)... with my OT rate at $50/hr i am often better off to buy "untested" things at retail store, instead of researching it and risking that i have to ship it back. As example would be my misunderstanding of the modem from the pricewatch. ( if you still have the link to the correct modem at hand i would appreciate if you would send it to me... i would order it for that price)
I agree that the big computer retail stores are worst places to get advice, and i would never try to get it there. The best place to get advice is internet :)... in the next sentence i argue with microsoft... to implement a standard that disables big group of hardware to make the system more stable, is like me putting my car on cinderblocks... it is much more stable on cinderblocks than on the wheels... hehehe

Here's the link Miro:

External 56K V.90 Phoebe Voice Fax Modem

On Pricewatch's site, it states in the Description area, that you can get the modem for $36 if you make a phone order and you mention Pricewatch. Check with the company to be sure.

Even so, the modem price is listed as $45 on their site without the discount. $10 for shipping.

As I have never heard of Phoebe, I did some checking on their website and on modemhelp.org. I also did some checking for reviews/opinions.

The good news is Phoebe's website looks good/professional and is easy to navigate. They even have a driver written for WinME. It is listed here:
Driver downloads for the Phoebe XV90 with the TI chipset

The bad news is... the reviews/opinions don't seem to whoopie. There were three reviews at epinions. None of them good... but all of them were from 2000. Nothing recent. There are no reviews for Phoebe at cnet. I don't know if it's because the company is small... or if it's just unknown.?? I've personally never used one or seen one.

Putting the Phoebe aside for now... I also did a little more research on Pricewatch for you. If you want to go with a namebrand... CDRExpress is offering an external Creative Labs Modem blaster for $62. Again with the $10 shipping. But it is known as a decent modem.

I would bet that if you check with a local computer shop run by the young geeks:) in your area they would have a similar deal without the shipping costs. And you would have someone you could yell at face to face if you run into a problem.:)
