My machine seems to be restarting itself. I've found it on several times when I'm sure I've turned it off. I asked my girlfriend if she's turned it on and she claims innocense. Next suspect was my 7 yr old son so I locked the door and two days later when I checked it the PC was on. Either I'm losing it or something strange is going on. Sound familar to anyone?

Settings / Control Panel / System / Advanced / Startup and Recovery / Settings. Make sure the box is UNCHECKED where it says "Automatically Restart" under System Failure.

First, I once had one motherboard that would do this no matter what I did--something apparently failed at the bios/ hardware level. Any power failure, or turning the external modem on or off would turn on the computer.

However for MOST people, you need to get into the bios/ setup, and make sure that the "wake on modem", or "wake on ring", and "wake on LAN" type settings are disabled.

However, even though I've got a UPS and surge protection, I STILL TO THIS DAY "Pull the big switch" by shutting off a main power strip.

If you turn it off at the power source, there's no way it can turn on. Hopefully, you're running a surge protector or a power center. If not, I'd recommend buying a power center, and you can turn off whatever device you don't want to have power.

I had a simmilar incident a year and a half ago, I turned on my Win ME laptop and then I came in 16 mins later (left completely alone, no one else touched it) and I found it restarted itself and it was on the Windows ME splash screen. I never ever had it happen again. What would have caused this. I don't think I have that option checked but I can't find that option anyway on my machine.

Faris,

Many machines have a setting in the BIOS to power on after mains power restoration (following a mains failure). A short mains blip can therefore switch them on.

On my previous machine this was the default, so I changed it. On this machine it is not default but you can set as an option.

I suspect this is for use in offices where machines are left on all the time and they want them straight back on again.

the bios probably has a power management option which causes the pc to power on when the modem is called or power fails. Both can be disabled easily

Together is better than alone
