g'day every1
I'v just got a new HD (IBM 75GIG 7200) that im trying to install as a second HD on my Windows ME machine, but i can't seem to get windows to assign it a drive letter. Bios can detect it, Device manager can see it (but the drive letter is greyed out) and it just won't come up :(It used to be on a MAC and i can't F'disk it either... only the original HD shoes up in Fdisk, and i did try and make it the master drive (on its own) but i just get the error
"no fdisk disk present" and yes i have changed the jumpers to every combination possible. Oddly when I changed the properties of the drive (in device manager) to a removable drive it came up as a 8GB drive and worked fine, I formatted it straight away but it still comes up as 8GB and im completely out of ideas. I’v read through a lot of the existing posts (very helpful site btw) but im still having trouble. Any help would be MUCHLY APPRICATED.Thanx in advance

I will assume that 8 Gig HD is the largest HD that you ever installed in your particular machine.
If this is true, then you are suffering from 8.5 Gig barrier.
This is the story. Install Windows 98 on a fast 486 machine and it will work. Install 40 gig HD on that machine and see if the machine will access it(not!)
I hope you're getting the idea.
I did not use Win ME as an example, (it will be stupid to run it on a 486). Windows 95 on the other hand is FAT 16 and can access drive up to 2 gig only.
Update you BIOS

Disk Manager 2000 (version 9.57)
and Drive Fitness Test are available at;

hey, glad to hear im not the only one in that boat!!
my probelm is EXACTLY like yours, to the point of the removable drive and everything... i went to the link offered, see where it gets me... if you find a solution, please post it here!

btw, I am running a 40Gig HD in my machine, so 8GB is not the largest HD i have run in this machine...
