I'm trying to restore my brother's old PC to a useable state after he botched an attempt at installing WinXP. His plan is to donate it to a local youth organization.
I wiped out the NTFS partition, reformatted as FAT32 & installed WinME instead. I was able to locate all the drivers at HP.com & even updated the BIOS. The problem I'm having is the screen resolution is 'stuck' at 640*480.
The specs for the "Trident Graphics Integrated in the ViaChipset" say, "Maximum non-interlaced resolution of up to 1600 x 1200 (when supported by monitor)". I'm using a Dell 17" Trinitron which is my 'testing' monitor, so I'm reasonably sure it's not the problem.
Here's the system specs:

I've tried the drivers at the HP site, then tried the drivers from the VIA website, but neither will allow resolution changes. I uninstalled the video drivers, downloaded & installed the VIA chipset drivers, then reinstalled the video drivers again...still stuck at 640*480. Just so you know, the drivers ARE installing...this is definitely not VGA mode. Possibly a monitor driver is necessary? It's detected as 'default monitor' on this PC but it's normally detected as 'Dell P780' on other systems.
Any ideas of what I'm overlooking?
Thanks.

Quick update....
I did some searching I found the Dell monitor drivers on DriverGuide.com. Downloaded & installed...now I have several resolutions to choose from.
All's well with the world again ;)

Interesting feedback. Usually monitor drivers don't fix this type of problem so it's useful information.

Well... gotta take it with a grain of salt - you know how unreliable some of these reports can be
