I bought a brand new computer, thinking I would finaly get rid of problems an old system brings. WRONG!!! Win Me is crap! I keep crashing and frontpage 2000 shuts down because of mfc42.dll errors. But my worst problem is with my scanner. I bought a Canon N650U and it would work part time. I downloaded all the latest drivers (even the via tech usb filter driver) and nothing worked. Even the support technician at Canon was baffled. So I packed it all up and got a refund. I got an Agfa e40 and followed CAREFULLY all the instructions and it still doesn't work! I start the computer and if I try to scan, it says it got a communication problem with the scanner. I put the computer on standby, reactivate it and then the scanner works... HELP!!! My system: Thunderbird 850Mhz on a ABIT K7T, 128 Ram 133mhz, 4 usb ports (printer and wingman controls work fine), Nvidia tnt2, 30 Go Fujitsu, 300Watts ATX mid-tower . Any idea?

I have a Umax Astra 2000p, hooks thru printer port and then printer hooks to scanner, if that the set up you have take that scanner back go to windows me site they have a special on UMAX scanners and they work great, I use it mainly for photos I scan my for the internet for selling dolls that I make so they have to be good quality scaned photos, and it works great with Windows Me, I had it with Windows 98se and just updated driver before I installed windows me, its inexpensive too.If you don't want your scanner thru printer port they also have the other kind, also made by umax go to their web site check it out before you buy. If you still have problems maybe your installation was not done correctely. Sue

I don't want an UMAX, it's a cheap brand and it's not recommended anywhere. Agfa e40 has an USB port and is tested for Windows me and the problem is not with the scanner, it's with the computer. I would have the same problem with any type or brand of scanner. I had it with the Canon n650u too.
I bought the computer from my brother and he puts AMDs in most of his computers with WinMe and he has no problem whatsoever in installing scanners. And I'm not a neophyte either, I KNOW how to install a driver... I have no problem installing any other hardware. The fact that the scanner works only after being put on standby mode must ring something in somebody's mind!

I had some troubles with my scanner (hp 3300c usb) with a Viatech usb controller as you, and to fix it i just changed the driver of the controller, on the device manager, to one called "Standard PCI to USB universal host controller" and the trouble is solved, maybe it could work for you too.

Did your brother have a scanner, if he did and it worked have your brother see if he can install your expensive scanner on your expensive computer. I judge things on how they work not the cost of it.Sue

Hey Sue,

If you're so sensitive, don't participate in forums. Saying that an UMAX is not recommended doesn't make any judgment on the value of your personnality. But your reply does give a hint.

Thank you Mr McLeod for your relevant answer. I will try that.

I agree with Sue, things are only as good as they work, not how much they cost, i had to throw out $300 SCSI scanner and replaced it with a $90 that workes much better (it works even on ME to my big surprise).
