I just purchased a HP scanner that won't run with windows me. I downloaded the patch, but that didn't work either. I got an error message saying Invalid Path, Unable to Continue Setup. HP said they'd send me a CD with updated installation software, but it would take 12 days. I need a scanner now, are there any other options to install it, or are there any scanners out there that are compatible with windows me?

you may need to unistall your scanner and try once again. Also, some peripherals (per manufacturers directions) require that drivers be loaded prior to connecting your peripherals. Zoom modems are a classic example of this.

I haven't even been able to install the scanner at all. When I put the installatoin CD in, it comes up with some message about USB support in BIOS. I called Gateway (the computer manufacturer) and they said everything was setup right in BIOS - that the scanner wouldn't work properly without downloading a patch from HP, which I did and that still didn't work. HP is sending me the CD, but I'm afraid that still won't work. I've had bad luck with everything I've tried to install with Windows ME. Are there any scanners that are compatible with ME - so I don't have to get any additional software? Please help, this is very frustrating.

I had a problem installing my ScanJet 5p. HP told me to go to their web site(www.HP.com) and run a search for file sj166en.exe download it and install it.During the download process when your rebooting you'll be asked to install your ME disk.Enter (cdrom drive letter):\win9x in the highlighted window and click ok. Mine installed fine.

Get into your Bios until you find something talking about USB, Make sure that it is enabled. Test that usb port with another usb device to ensure that it is not a hardware problem. Go into safe mode , Right click my computer, properties, device manager. Remove all Scanners listed. Check the status of the USB port.{ insure no yellow Exclamation mark }. For the small advantage of ME, i would rather go back to 98se. You may want to try and see if u can install the scanner on another pc { just in case it is a scanner problem}.

Once again, thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Customer Care.

I had the same problem with a 3300cse. Did HP's instructions get the scanner running? Please email me with your response. Thanks.

I have a HP 5300C up and running at my system at home... (HP driver CD didn't want to install as USB, but Win ME did find the thing as new hardware, and it even new that it was a HP 5300C)
When I'm at home I'll look for the USB settings in my BIOS and I'll post them.
What is the error message about the USB settingsin the BIOS ?

I have tried on many occasions to install my HP Scanjet 330cse after upgrading from 98SE to ME and I get an instant message that says "The setup program was unable to turn on your USB ports. I have a webcam that works perfectly and a printer that is just fine with the USB. I have downloaded sj514me and a patch from Microsoft and I still can't do an install.

As I said... I did check the BIOS of my computer (Abit KT7-RAID mobo) and the BIOS of my father his computer (W5VIA from Win Technologies)both haven't much settings for USB.
The on board USB is enabled for both, while the W5VIA has USB keyboard support disabled.
The Abit KT7-RAID has the USB keyboard support set to OS.
The Abit KT7-RAID also has a feature 'Assign IRQ to USB' which is enabled.
My Scanner is attached to the Abit KT7-RAID; so the settings of this BIOS might be of most interest for you...By the way, if it doesn't help, try the hardware detection in the Configuration panel, while you have your HP instalation CD inserted in your CDRom drive.
That's how I did get the thing up and running...

HP Scanjet 5p software installed.Drivers installed. But in Device Managers.
Symbios Logic 53C416 SCSI Adapter (For HP scanjets)This device is neither present nor working properly or does not have all the drivers installed.
So I updated drivers for this and Window has recommended continue using the current driver
Symbios.....(above one ).In Control Panel/Hp scanjets/no scanners found- even though HP Scan Jet 5p is connected thru Synbios adapter.
Need advice.
