My HP Scanjet 5100C is up and running on Windows ME. The USB printer in an HP Deskjet 960C. The scanner seems to work just fine in the Precision Scan mode; it is a parallel device. Using the HP Copy Utility is the problem. In the malfunctioning mode it acts like it is dumping the scan/copy to the printer, but nothing happens. There is no indication that it is queueing. Sometimes it works like a champ, copying anything, in color or otherwise, to the printer. As far as I know I am using the latest software and drivers from the Internet, HP and others.
I checked device manager and it does not show any danger signals. However, Under 'scanners and cameras' it references HP Scanjet 5100C #2. Could that be it? That is, did I install something twice?
I don't know how to correct it, but the second sentence in my original message should have read "The USB printer is an HP Deskjet 960C" rather than "in an".
