I tried to run ScanDisk all day yesterday to no avail. It won't complete b/c I kept getting the "ScanDisk has restarted 10 times because Windows or another program has been writing to this drive, quitting some programs may enable SD to finish sooner. Do you want to continue receiving this warning?" thing. I have turned off everything I can think of, checked for viruses, turned off the antivirus, turned off everything I could on ctrl/alt/delete box, etc. Defrag won't finish, either. What the hell? If I get this figured out, I have a whole other question to work on, too. TIA for any ideas!!!

Something's running, probably your Anti-virus software. If you stop your AV program, and still have a problem, Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to see what's running. Close all but explorer and systray.
There are tons of posts on this subject; do a search.

You usually have to run ScanDisk and Defrag in SafeMode. I had the same problem. Just start up your computer and hit F8 key when you see computer logo appear.

Just boot into safe mode.
It's easiest, fastest, and will solve your problem... unless you have a virus writing to the drive there.
Tap the F8 key during boot up (after the POST... memory check and *beep*) to get a boot menu. Choose #3 safe mode.

I use EndItAll 2. When I get ready to perform a Scandisk or Defrag, I fire that bad boy up and then I have no problems what so ever. It is very easy to use and when you finish what you are doing do a restart to bring everything back up.

The advice to use them in safe mode is good advice but should not be necessary. Try looking also at this post, points 2,5,6,7,9,16

I have NEVER had to run scan disk in safe mode OR turn off my screen saver.
I don't have AV run is real time (i.e. continuously) and have disabled system restore and PCHealth.

I had this same problem. The solution is that you have to close Windows and run ScanDisk in DOS. I did this by using my startup disk.
To create a startup disk:
Open Add/Remove Programs properties in Control Panel.
Click the Startup Disk tab, and then click Create Disk.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
NotesTo make a startup disk, you will need one floppy disk with at least 1.2 megabytes (MB) capacity. When you insert the startup disk in your computer before restarting, the computer gets its startup instructions from that disk rather than the hard disk.

Well, the real question now is "how come some of us can run it in Windows and some have to go to DOS?" I agree with Trev that it should not be necessary.

... thanks for all the info ....... this problem has been troubling me for sometime, and before i installed any AV software. The tips were helpful and i ran it in 'safe mode'. It still came up with 'started the 10 times' bit sometime after i had started scanning, but i continued and it completed the scan OK. It did reorder my desktop after reboot.... thx again tho :-)
